Collaboration with like-minded organisations is an important step on the path to reconciliation. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) provided a valuable opportunity for the Port of Townsville to connect with the team at NQ Dry Tropics NRM and share our respective reconciliation journeys.

NQ Dry Tropics representatives attended our annual all-staff NRW lunch on 27 May, where they presented on their work on Country and more than two decades of engagement with Traditional Owner groups across their large catchment.

The lunch also featured a Welcome to Country from Wulgurukaba Traditional Owner Brenton Creed and special didgeridoo performance from Radio 4K1Gโ€™s 2025 So You Think You Can Didge winner Braithen Knox, who is a proud Gudjala man.

Last Wednesday, members of our Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group were privileged to attend a meeting of the Burdekin Dry Tropics Traditional Owner Management Group, where they shared insights from our developing RAP journey.

The team was encouraged and challenged by questions raised in the session and value the meaningful conversations that took place. We will reflect on the feedback as we continue to strengthen how we connect, listen, and evolve on our path to reconciliation.

Thanks to NQ Dry Tropics for initiating these important discussions. We look forward to continuing this positive collaboration.

A reminder, seagrass scientists from TropWATER are surveying seagrass meadows from the air during low tides this weekend until tomorrow Monday 18 May for Port of Townsville Limited.

The seagrass meadows being monitored are found around Magnetic Island, Shelly Beach, Rowes Bay, Pallarenda, the Strand and Cleveland Bay.

You may see the helicopter repeatedly dropping very low and hovering โ€“ but donโ€™t worry, the team is just getting a close look at the seagrass cover and the species growing in different areas.

We do helicopter surveys along with boat surveys that use drop cameras to assess meadows in deeper waters.

To learn more about seagrass monitoring check out the latest reports located on the Port of Townsvilleโ€™s webpage https://bit.ly/40Hqc6t.

Today on Anzac Day, we pause to honour the brave men and women who have served, and continue to serve our nation, and remember their sacrifices to defend our freedom.

One of our Project Managers Andrew Jones wrote this heartfelt poem to share today.

โ€œThey shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning; We will remember them.โ€

Lest we forget.

Following the recent wet weather, Port of Townsville is continuing to undertake routine mosquito treatment across its Environmental Parks from Tuesday 21 to Thursday 23 April.

Mosquitoes pose a risk to our lifestyle and have the potential to transmit mosquito borne diseases.

Spraying to target adult mosquitoes is used to reduce mosquito populations around the Port.

Residents near and around our Environmental Park can also help to limit mosquito numbers by emptying containers that hold water and could be a place for mosquitoes to breed.

Further information about mosquitoes in Townsville can be found on the Townsville City Council website: https://bit.ly/48YQZQe
