SPEED LIMIT REDUCTIONS AT GRASSMERE JUNCTION
Council has sought and received approval from the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) to introduce new 60km/h speed limits on the Staywood Road and Grassmere Road approaches to the Hopkins Highway at Grassmere Junction.

The reduction from 100km/h to 60km/h will increase drivers' reaction times as they approach the intersection.

Council has been working with DTP to improve road safety at Grassmere Junction for some time in response to community concerns about the intersection. Moyne has responsibility for Staywood Road and Grassmere Road, while DTP manages the Hopkins Highway including the intersection.

A delegation from Moyne Shire met with senior advisors to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety at Spring Street in May 2026, where Council's previous advocacy about safety at Grassmere Junction was acknowledged. We've been working hard to make safety improvements on the areas we manage, and we will continue to advocate to DTP on the roads they oversee.

Council would like to highlight the important advocacy provided by Chris Snell of George Taylor's Store at Grassmere, who has seen up-close too many collisions at the intersection.

We encourage drivers to follow the new speed limit, with 60km/h signs expected to be installed in the coming week.
