Indonesiaโs Mount Anak Krakatau has erupted again, sending significant volcanic ash into the atmosphere and causing major disruption to air travel on Sunday, 6 September 2026.
The volcano, located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, has been experiencing heightened activity since Friday night, with repeated eruptions continuing into the weekend.

The impact has now reached Indonesiaโs busiest airport.
Operations at Jakartaโs Soekarno-Hatta International Airport were temporarily suspended after volcanic ash associated with Anak Krakatau was detected in the airport area.
The initial closure was scheduled until 5:30am on Sunday but was subsequently extended until 9:30am Jakarta time as authorities continued assessing the ash situation.
Reuters reported that as many as 209 flights were affected, creating significant disruption for passengers and potentially causing further delays as airlines reposition aircraft and crews.

Travellers in Bali should take particular notice.
Indonesiaโs Directorate General of Civil Aviation confirmed that Denpasar (Bali) was among the domestic routes affected by the disruption at Soekarno-Hatta. Flights to Lampung and Surabaya were also affected.
Even passengers whose flights are not directly cancelled could experience delays because disruptions at Jakarta can have a knock-on effect across Indonesiaโs aviation network.

Satellite monitoring detected two significant ash clouds from Anak Krakatau. One reached approximately 20,000 feet, while another was detected as high as 50,000 feet, spreading across parts of Banten, Lampung, Bengkulu and towards the Indian Ocean.
Authorities have advised people to remain at least 3 kilometres away from the active crater.
Despite Anak Krakatauโs history โ including the deadly tsunami triggered by a partial collapse of the volcano in 2018 โ authorities currently report no immediate tsunami threat from this eruption. No casualties have been reported.

Passengers travelling through Jakarta, or connecting between Jakarta and Bali, should check directly with their airline before leaving for the airport.
