Three generations. Eight family members. One shared Tiger Moth story. ✈️

Today I took the youngest member of this family up for a flight in VH-DHR. It was only afterwards that I discovered every one of them—from the grandparents and parents to the children—has now flown in a Tiger Moth.

That was far too special a family tradition not to capture, so we gathered everyone together for a photo in front of DHR.

What a wonderful aviation experience for three generations of one family to share.

Three generations, eight family members and one shared Tiger Moth story ✈️

Today, the youngest member of this wonderful family took to the skies in our Tiger Moth DHR. Only afterwards did I discover that every member of the family, from grandparents and parents to the children, has now experienced a flight in a Tiger Moth!

We couldn’t let such a special moment pass without gathering everyone for a family photo in front of DHR. What an incredible aviation tradition to share across generations!!

Our latest blog post is up!

✈️ What’s It Really Like to Fly in a Tiger Moth?

Ever wondered what it’s actually like to climb into the front cockpit of a Tiger Moth and take to the skies?

In the latest Pilot’s Log, I take you through the whole experience—from climbing onto the wing and strapping in, to hand-starting the engine, taxiing, take-off and flying over the Yarra Valley.

I’ll explain what you’ll see, hear and feel along the way, why we weave while taxiing, how much wind you really feel in an open cockpit, what happens during a loop or barrel roll, and why landing a Tiger Moth involves looking out the side rather than straight ahead.

There are also a few things that might surprise you. Despite its vintage looks, noise and vibration, a normal Tiger Moth scenic flight is remarkably gentle.

And on the right day, you might even see the Tiger Moth’s shadow on a cloud, surrounded by a rainbow halo. 🌈

Read the latest Pilot’s Log and discover what flying in a Tiger Moth is really like.

✈️ FROM THE PILOT'S LOG — How I Came to Fly the Tiger Moth

The first time somebody offered me a flight in a Tiger Moth, I didn't get to go.

I was a kid, it was around 1980, and I've never quite forgotten it.

What I couldn't have known then was just how often the Tiger Moth would reappear throughout my life.

From seeing my first one at Southport, to a Tiger Moth sharing the hangar while I learned to fly at Kyneton, to the day Dad and I unknowingly bought each other Tiger Moth flights for our birthdays — somehow this remarkable aeroplane kept crossing my path.

But the journey to eventually flying one professionally was anything but straightforward.

There were setbacks, years away from flying, a CPL that took more than two decades to achieve, a serious medical interruption, night freight flying, instructing — and quite a few unexpected turns along the way.

Then, in 2023, everything came together.

I've told the full story in the latest Pilot's Log:

✈️ FROM THE PILOT'S LOG — Where It All Began

Where does a lifetime of flying begin?

For me, some of my earliest memories are sitting in the back of a Cessna 172 while Dad took my sister and me flying from Kyneton.

I loved being in the air... although some of Dad's stall recoveries and pretend engine failures scared me half to death!

It wasn't until I was seven, during an airline flight to Canberra, that I decided flying was what I wanted to do.

Years later, I returned to Kyneton Aero Club to learn to fly myself, eventually making my first solo in VH-ABW — a Cessna 172 that Dad had also flown.

It's a story about childhood memories, a father and son, and where a lifelong love of aviation began.

✈️ Introducing the Pilot's Log

We've added something new to the Tiger Moth Joy Flights Yarra Valley website — the Pilot's Log.

It's a place where I'll be sharing some of the stories behind the flying: personal experiences from my own aviation journey, life with the Tiger Moth, aviation history, behind-the-scenes stories and, of course, flying over the beautiful Yarra Valley.

There are already two stories to read, covering everything from my earliest memories of flying with Dad to the long and sometimes unexpected journey that eventually put me in the cockpit of a Tiger Moth.

There'll be plenty more to come.

If you enjoy aeroplanes, aviation stories or have ever wondered what life looks like from the cockpit of a Tiger Moth, have a look at the Pilot's Log.
