Wild Wednesday: Spot the out-of-towner! 📍

Thanks to all the recent rain around Uluru, our Operations Manager, Milika, snapped this incredible Egret making itself right at home in the grass.

While you might expect to see waterbirds on the coast, egrets fly massive distances across inland Australia whenever rain fills up desert waterholes. Seeing that striking white plumage against our famous red earth and spinifex is pretty unique. 🌅💧

Wild Wednesday: Spinifex Grass 🌾
It might just look like a spiky clump in the sand, but spinifex (Triodia) is one of the toughest and most important plants in Australia!

Did you know this outback...

📐 Covers roughly 22% of Australia’s mainland—making it the dominant backdrop of the Outback!

🚰 Has incredibly deep roots, which can be up to 3 metres deep!

⭕ Grows in a ring shape. Perhaps you've noticed this from above, on a scenic flight or when flying into the outback. Essentially, as spinifex ages, the middle dies off and the outer green shoots keep expanding, creating the striking circular rings that can be seen from above.

🛠️ Traditional owners like the Aṉangu use spinifex and process it to obtain its sticky resin, called kiti in Pitjantjatjara. Kiti is used as a super-strong resin glue to make tools.

It's Wild Wednesday! For this week, have you ever seen a Central netted dragon? These small lizards are common across Central Australia & Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. If you're lucky enough to join our resident, "Lizard Whisperer", Nick, on tour, there's a high chance his eagle eyes will be able to spot onf of these beauties.

However, did you know central netted dragons actually communicate with each other by bobbing their heads and waving their legs? These moves can be used by territorial males to maintain their territorty and ward off anyone trying to take over their patch of turf!

Mutitjulu Waterhole is easily one of our favorite stops on tour. Tucked into the side of Uluru, this special place is a semi-permanent source of water and a calm energy you can feel the moment you walk up the path.

🌼 Wild Wednesday: The Iconic Aussie Wattle 🌼

For this Wild Wednesday, we are diving back into the incredible flora of the Red Centre! This week, we’re looking at an Australian icon: the Wattle (Acacia).

We have so many interesting facts about these plants that we could honestly 'wattle' on about them for hours...

Wattle are a massive family: Australia is home to over 1,000 different species of wattle! 🌲

It's our National floral emblem: The Golden Wattle is Australia’s official national floral emblem, and it’s the inspiration behind our national sporting colours. 🦘

The Green & Gold History: Prior to 1984, Australia’s national sports teams wore a mix of combinations—sometimes blue with red and white, sometimes blue and gold, or green and gold. It wasn’t until 1984 that Green and Gold were officially declared the national colours of Australia! 🏅

Some sunsets are simply too good not to share. Our guides captured this once-in-a-lifetime sunset on a recent Uluru's Best & Segway at Sunset tour. The whole sky completely lit up orange—honestly, you had to see it to believe it! 🌅

It's that time of the week, Wild Wednesday, and this week we've got a cutie to share with you, the Mala! Mala, or Rufous Hair Wallaby as they can also be known, are small macropods, similar to a quokka.

These cuties were once wild across Central Australia, however since settlement and introduction of feral animals like cats, foxes and rabbits, the wild population of Mala has dwindled. Today they are extinct in the wild on mainland Australia, with the only wild populations existing on 2 islands off of the coast of Western Australia. Within Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, rangers and Anangu caretake a small population of approximately 250 Mala in a specially fenced enclosure that is predator free.

Unfortunately visitors to the National Park aren't able to visit this conservation sanctuary, however if you are curious about Mala and want to see them for yourself, our neighbours at have a population of Mala available for visitors to see in their specialised nocturnal house or on their Nocturnal Tour.
