***All about mooring on tanker***

What is LDBF & Why It Matters in Tanker Mooring?

🔹 LDBF = Line Design Break Force
➤ The maximum force a new mooring rope can take before breaking.

🔹 Match it with SDMBL (Ship Design MBL)
➤ Tankers must use ropes with LDBF = 100–105% of SDMBL
Too low? Rope may snap.
Too high? Equipment may fail.

🔹 NEVER use Polypropylene on tankers!
➤ It melts easily and has poor resistance to heat/chemicals.

🔹 Use these materials for tanker ropes:
Nylon
HMPE
Polyester
(Each has different stretch & strength — match with your winch & brake system.)

🔹 Brake Rendering Test (BRT)
➤ Set mooring brake to slip at 60% of LDBF, not higher.

>Example for clarity:
If SDMBL = 100 tons → choose rope with LDBF = 100–105 tons.
Brake set at 60 tons (60%).

>Don't use rope with LDBF 130t on SDMBL 80t ship — may overload the system!

>Remember: Safe mooring = Right rope + Right brake + Right setup

SIRE 2.0 – Key Facts (As of 2025)

Yes, SIRE 2.0 is now in force, gradually replacing the old VIQ system since 2023.

Focus shifted from paper-checking to real-time observation and crew behavior.

Conducted using ODIA app (Onboard Digital Inspection App) on tablets.

Inspectors now watch how crew perform tasks, not just ask questions.

Junior officers and ratings can also be questioned.

Based on risk profile of the vessel – inspection is customized.

Human factors (fatigue, workload, communication) are evaluated.

No score, but observations and deficiencies directly impact vetting result.

TDI Cargo – Real World Carriage Notes

🔸 Tank Requirement:
➡️ Only Stainless Steel (SS) tanks are acceptable.
➡️ Epoxy/Zinc coating tanks strictly prohibited. TDI reacts & destroys lining.

🔸 Moisture Sensitivity:
➡️ TDI reacts violently with water — even humidity in the tank is dangerous.
➡️ Adjacent tanks must not contain water, slops, or steam condensate.

🔸 Heating System:
➡️ Steam heating not allowed, even if present — must be fully blanked or disconnected.
➡️ If required, TDI is heated via external Thermal Oil Units, not direct coils.

🔸 Loading Prep:
➡️ Must ensure tanks are 100% dry, gas-free, and tested with moisture detectors.
➡️ Line dry-blown with nitrogen or dry air.

🔸 Discharge Considerations:
➡️ Dedicated pumps & lines preferred.
➡️ Avoid cross-contamination — extreme sensitivity to residue from previous cargo.

🔸 Tank Cleaning Post-Carriage:
➡️ Cleaning is very difficult. Requires dry hot water, then detergent, followed by intensive drying.
➡️ Many companies recommend dedicated tanks to avoid future contamination.

***Not just chemical — TDI is reactive, toxic, and unforgiving.
Handle it like a pro or walk away.
