A list of some deadliest train accident in Bangladesh after the independence (This isn’t a complete list):
1. 15 January, 1989 (1989 Majhukhan Bridge Train Disaster): Due to signaling error the Intercity Urmi Express collided with a mail train at Majhukhan Bridge, Tongi, Gagipur. The locomotive no of both train were 2603 and 2607 respectively. The Intercity train consisted of 10 coaches and Mail train consisted of 7 coaches. Several cars rolled off an embankment into a rice paddy. Due to the Bishwa Ijtema religious festival at Tongi, there were over 2,000 people in total on both trains, with many riding on roofs or between coaches. Many report estimated between 110 and 170 death in this crash, through the official death toll was 96. About 400 people injured in this crash. This accident is usually considered as the worst train accident in Bangladesh.
2. 2 June, 1972: The collision between two train in Jessore killed 76 people and injured around 500 people.
3. 26 January, 1979 (1979 Gaidghat Train Disaster): The Rocket Mail was going at high speed. When the train crossing a curve at Gaidghat, Chuadanga the locomotive and all the coaches of that train derailed and overturned. Officially 74 people perished in this accident, but local claimed that around 500 people perished. An orginal video footage of this crash is available in the internet.
4. 22 March, 1983: A train was crossing a bridge near Iswardi, Pabna. When the bridge collapsed several coaches of the train falls down killing 60 people.
5. 17 May, 1987: An express train derailed between Kamalasagar/Kasba and Nayanpur. 36 people were perished and 58 people were injured.
6. 11 July, 2006: The Ekota Express train hits a bus near Akkelpur, Joypurhat killing 33 people.
7. 13 January, 1985: Parbatipur bound Simanto Express train caught fire near Bheramara, killing 27 people and injuring 27 people. Though some report said around 150 people perished in the fire.
8. 13 January, 1995 (1995 Hili train disaster): 511no local train from Goalanda to Parbatipur was standing on line 1 of the Hili railway station. Shortly after, the intercity 748 Simanta express train (Khulna bound) entered the same line due to negligence of Station master and pointsman. At that time, a catastrophe head-on collision occurred. With a loud noise, two coaches of the Goalanda local train including the engine were destroyed and thrown onto the intercity train. Officially, 27 people were killed. But many report estimated around 50 death.
9. 15 March, 1986: Due to Sabotage, a train derails near Bheramara, Kushtia killing 25 people.
10. 23 October, 2023 (2023 Bhairab Tragedy): The Egarosindur Godhuli train was switching from down line to up line. Meanwhile an intermodal train lead by 3028 locomotive was travelling in down line. While the last 2 coaches were still in down line, the intermodel train hits the rear 2coaches. 20 people perishing and 40 more people were injured. The reason of this accident was because the train driver of intermodal train violated the red signal.
