⚡ A European first: direct shore power connection in a drydock.
EDR Antwerp Shipyard and Jeco Energies have successfully realised a unique shore power project, supported by the European union and VLAIO
When a vessel arrives in drydock for maintenance, repairs or retrofitting, power on board remains crucial. Traditionally, ships either run their auxiliary engines or rely on temporary generators to maintain the required power supply during their stay.
Both options result in additional emissions and fuel consumption, impacting the vessel's CII performance while also affecting ESG and CSRD objectives within shipyard operations. In May, EDR Antwerp Shipyard successfully connected the vessel Grey Fox of MACS Maritime Carrier Shipping directly to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges power grid while in drydock.
This innovative solution reduces emissions, improves environmental performance and supports both vessel and shipyard sustainability objectives.
The project includes 13 high-voltage junction boxes and 5 mobile container units, providing up to 2.5 MVA of shore power capacity across the yard. Combined with the solar panels already installed at EDR Antwerp Shipyard, this marks another important step towards a greener and more sustainable shipyard in the heart of Europe.
