Philadelphia International Airport is exploring what the future of regional air connectivity could look like✈️⚡

Recent demonstration flights by Electra tested connections between smaller airports and Philadelphia International Airport, exploring how hybrid electric aircraft could operate within existing airport infrastructure.

The demonstrations form part of the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Programme, with further flights planned throughout 2026.

PHL is currently accredited at Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, reflecting its ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and advance its carbon management.

From reviewing applications and supporting airports to maintaining consistent requirements and independent verification, running a global carbon management programme involves much more than the accreditation itself.

In the Five Minute Feature of the August 2026 Bulletin, ACI EUROPE speaks with Panagiotis Karamanos, Managing Director of Environmental Minds, which has been responsible for the administration of Airport Carbon Accreditation since December 2024.

Panagiotis shares insights into how Environmental Minds supports airports around the world, how the programme maintains its rigour and credibility, and the expertise required to administer a global accreditation programme.

A clear step forward in carbon management for Mactan-Cebu International Airport 🌏✈️

Mactan Cebu International Airport in the Philippines has achieved Level 2 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, strengthening its commitment to reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency.

Under its updated Carbon Management Plan, the airport is targeting a more than 90% reduction in emissions intensity by 2029, compared with its baseline, as part of its longer term commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The airport is already putting this plan into practice through a range of measures, including:
☀️ A 1.64 MWp rooftop solar installation generating renewable electricity
⛽ Fuel consumption monitoring across vehicles and equipment
💡 The conversion of lighting to LED technology

With Hilo International Airport’s latest upgrade, all five airports operated by the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation are now accredited at Level 3 of Airport Carbon Accreditation 🌎 🛫

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Kahului Airport, Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, Līhuʻe Airport and Hilo International Airport are strengthening their carbon management and actively engaging third parties in managing the wider carbon footprint associated with airport activity.

The Department is working towards a 50% reduction in airport controlled carbon emissions by 2030 and net zero airport controlled emissions by 2045. Its approach includes expanding clean transport infrastructure, replacing fossil fuel powered vehicles with zero emission alternatives, and working across the airport ecosystem to address wider emissions sources.

Congratulations to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation and all five airport teams on this collective achievement 👏

Trapani Airport, operated by Airgest S.p.A., has begun its carbon management journey by joining Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level , operated by Airgest S.p.A., has begun its carbon management journey by joining Airport Carbon Accreditation at LevelAena 2.

The results speak for themselves. In 2024, emissions fell significantly compared with the base year, driven by a sharp drop in diesel consumption for heating and the absence of refrigerant gas leaks. In 2025, emissions remained well below base year levels, supported by the commissioning of the airport's photovoltaic plant and the gradual rollout of more energy efficient solutions.

Looking ahead, the airport plans to replace its company fleet, introduce 400 Hz systems and expand photovoltaic generation, as part of its longer term ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

The certificate was presented by Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, to Salvatore Ombra, President of Airgest, and Enrico Malato, General Director of Airgest, during a ceremony attended by Alessandro Aricò, Transport Minister for Regione Siciliana.

Dublin Airport has become the first location in Ireland to introduce pantograph charging for electric buses, backed by a €17 million investment in cleaner ground transport.

The new infrastructure powers a 14-vehicle electric shuttle fleet operated by Aircoach, carrying passengers between car parks and terminals for around 2.5 million journeys a year. Fast, automated charging arms top up the buses at route endpoints, cutting the need for lengthy depot stops and keeping services running smoothly throughout the day.

The switch from diesel to electric is expected to save over 1,470 tonnes of CO2e annually, with funding support from the European Commission's Connecting Europe Facility.

Dublin Airport currently holds Level 4+ certification under Airport Carbon Accreditation, placing it among the top 13% of airports worldwide for carbon management, and this project marks another step in its broader decarbonisation strategy✈️🌍

Nadi International Airport, operated by Fiji Airports, has broken ground on Fiji’s largest airport solar farm, marking a significant step in its carbon management journey.

The 3.25 megawatt installation is expected to meet the airport’s current electricity demand while building in additional capacity for future development. It is part of a wider approach to strengthen energy resilience, manage operational costs and reduce emissions over time.

Already certified at Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, Nadi continues to demonstrate how airports can move from planning to implementation, embedding carbon reduction into infrastructure decisions and long term growth.

Uzbekistan is now on the Airport Carbon Accreditation map. Nine airports operated by Uzbekistan Airports JSC have joined the programme, marking a significant step in bringing carbon management across the country’s airport network 🌍🛬

Eight airports have been accredited at Level 1, while Tashkent International Airport has joined directly at Level 2, making it the highest-accredited airport in Central Asia under Airport Carbon Accreditation.

From emissions monitoring and energy efficiency to stakeholder engagement and longer-term decarbonisation, this is an important move for Uzbekistan’s airports.
