Uzbekistan Airports begin their carbon management journey ✈️🌍

During the Joint ACI EUROPE and International Civil Aviation Organization EUR/NAT Environmental Protection Seminar in Tashkent, Olivier Jankovec, Director General at ACI EUROPE, presented the Airport Carbon Accreditation certificate to Javlonbek Umarkhodjaev, Chairman of the Board of Uzbekistan Airports, at a dedicated certification ceremony.

Nine airports operated by Uzbekistan Airports are now part of the programme. Samarkand, Urgench, Namangan, Fergana, Nukus, Termez, Karshi and Navoi airports have achieved Level 1, while Tashkent International Airport has joined directly at Level 2.

This marks the start of a coordinated approach to carbon management across Uzbekistan’s airport network. The airports are already working towards higher levels by strengthening emissions monitoring, improving energy efficiency, engaging stakeholders and implementing long term decarbonisation measures.

Airport Carbon Accreditation took part last week in 2026, the European Commission’s flagship mobility event, which brought together stakeholders from across Europe for an exhibition and marketplace in Brussels.

At our exhibition stand, we showcased how airports around the world are measuring, managing and reducing their carbon emissions, while exchanging views with participants from the transport, infrastructure and other sectors.

The event also provided an opportunity to present the latest developments in Airport Carbon Accreditation. Simone Rho, Data Analyst at Environmental Minds, presented the programme at the marketplace, highlighting the latest data and progress across Europe.

In our latest interview, Yigit Laçin, CEO of YDA Dalaman Airport, discusses how the airport has progressed from Level 2 to Level 3+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation in just three years.

From its 14.445 MWp rooftop solar power plant and energy efficiency measures to fleet electrification and collaboration with airport partners, Yigit discusses the practical steps behind this progress and the airport’s plans for further decarbonisation.

The interview also looks ahead to COP31, taking place this November in Antalya, Türkiye. Yigit highlights the opportunity for COP31 to bring greater international attention to projects already delivering clear and measurable results, while enabling airports, public authorities, technology providers and aviation organisations to exchange practical experience and share lessons from implementation.

For YDA Dalaman Airport, its Solar Power Plant provides a concrete example, meeting 100% of the terminal’s annual electricity demand through renewable energy generated on site.

Aéroport de Libreville, operated by GSEZ Airport in Gabon, has reached Level 4+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation, becoming the third airport in Africa to achieve this level 💙 ✈️

Since joining the programme at Level 1 in 2015, the airport has steadily strengthened its approach to carbon management, focusing on energy efficiency, emissions reduction and collaboration across the airport community. Now at Level 4+, it is aligning its carbon management with global climate goals, driving absolute emissions reductions across its operations and strengthening engagement with stakeholders across the wider airport ecosystem.

Recognising that airport decarbonisation requires action across the wider airport community, GSEZ Airport is working with airlines, ground handling companies, service providers, suppliers, authorities and other partners operating at the airport. This engagement supports coordinated action and encourages emissions reductions beyond the airport operator’s direct control.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, operated by Airports of Mauritius Co Ltd., has joined Airport Carbon Accreditation directly at Level 3, bringing Mauritius onto the global map of airports taking action to manage and reduce their carbon emissions. The airport is strengthening its approach to carbon management and emissions reduction, with a long term target to reduce its carbon emissions by 24% by 2035 🌍✈️

Its action plan includes expanding solar energy and LED lighting, improving building and HVAC systems, optimising energy use, and working towards the electrification of its vehicle and bus fleets.

The airport is also placing strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement, working with organisations across the airport community to improve emissions data collection, build awareness and support collaborative action.

Летище София / Sofia Airport is investing in renewable energy to support its decarbonisation journey ☀️ ✈️

SOF Connect, the operator of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, has begun construction of a 5 MW photovoltaic power plant, with 8,300 solar modules set to generate clean electricity for on site consumption.

Covering around 50,000 m², the installation will feature an intelligent real time monitoring and management system and is expected to provide a significant share of the airport’s energy needs. A battery energy storage facility is also planned as a next stage of the project.

Vasil Levski Sofia Airport is currently accredited at Level 4 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, aligning its carbon management ambitions with global climate goals, driving absolute emissions reductions across its operations, and strengthening engagement with stakeholders.

Congratulations to Aalborg Lufthavn on reaching Level 4+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation 👏

The upgrade recognises the airport’s continued work to reduce emissions, engage stakeholders and address its wider airport ecosystem.

Key actions include:

⚡ 59% of operational equipment electrically powered in 2025, supported by expanded charging infrastructure
💡 99% of lighting converted to LED across the terminal, parking areas, runway and apron by 2024
📉 10.8% reduction in electricity consumption since 2018
🔋 Hourly energy monitoring and energy screening to identify opportunities for greater efficiency
⛽ Collaboration with aviation and energy partners to support the future availability of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Aalborg Airport has also mapped its Scope 3 emissions, strengthening its approach to managing emissions across the wider airport ecosystem.

Philadelphia International Airport is exploring what the future of regional air connectivity could look like✈️⚡

Recent demonstration flights by Electra tested connections between smaller airports and Philadelphia International Airport, exploring how hybrid electric aircraft could operate within existing airport infrastructure.

The demonstrations form part of the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Programme, with further flights planned throughout 2026.

PHL is currently accredited at Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, reflecting its ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and advance its carbon management.
