The latest ITLB report on road transport conditions in Belgium sends a clear signal.

The sector experienced a difficult first quarter.

Activity declined, both in domestic and international transport. At the same time, costs increased much faster than selling prices. In other words, margin pressure remains very strong.

The report also highlights other well known pressures in the field: diesel price volatility, growing liquidity issues, unfavourable payment terms and persistent recruitment difficulties.

A useful reminder of the economic reality the sector is still facing.

🚛 Diesel engines continue to evolve.

Volvo Trucks has unveiled a new driveline featuring a next-generation 13-litre engine and an optimized gearbox.

The objective is clear: reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions while improving operational performance. Renault Trucks announces fuel savings of up to 4% compared to the previous generation, while the use of alternative fuels such as HVO and B100 can further reduce emissions across the fuel's entire lifecycle.

This announcement highlights a reality that is often overlooked: the energy transition is not only about new powertrains.

For many transport operators, especially in long-haul heavy-duty transport, these solutions offer an immediately available pathway to decarbonisation, without waiting for the full deployment of electric or hydrogen infrastructure.

More than ever, the market appears to be moving toward a multi-energy future, where improved combustion engines, renewable fuels, electric mobility and hydrogen will each have a role to play depending on the use case.

⚡ Another important development for electric mobility in Belgium.

ENGIE Vianeo has won a major public contract to deploy nearly 3,000 additional charging points in Wallonia.

The announced ambitions are significant:

▪️ 12,000 charging points in Belgium by 2028,

▪️ 25,000 across Europe by 2030,

▪️ and 1,000 dedicated to heavy-duty vehicles.

This is clearly a sign that charging infrastructure continues to develop.

At the same time, a lot still remains to be proven in practice, especially in terms of actual deployment, usage, accessibility and alignment with real transport needs.

For the mobility energy market, this is therefore a development worth following closely.

Hydrogen mobility is taking another concrete step in Belgium.

Atawey has announced the deployment of three new hydrogen stations for heavy mobility in Belgium by the end of 2027, with a total distribution capacity of more than 7 tonnes per day. The project is linked to Colruyt Group and Virya Energy.

For the mobility energy market, this is an important signal. Hydrogen is still developing, but projects like this show that the infrastructure side is continuing to move forward, especially for intensive and heavy-duty use cases.

A strong solution also means strong support.

BMW is bringing hydrogen back into the mobility conversation.

With its recent video communication, the group is reminding the market that even for passenger vehicles, battery electric may not be the only decarbonisation pathway.

The topic is still open, but the signal is clear: the transition will likely not be built around one single energy.

White hydrogen is getting a lot of attention in Belgium.

At this stage, we are still talking about exploration, not a confirmed exploitable resource.

But if this potential is confirmed, hydrogen could take on a very different role: less a question of production, and more a question of access, logistics and use cases.

For the mobility energy market, this is clearly a signal worth watching. In time, it could further strengthen the shift toward a multi-energy reality for heavy transport and fleets.

A promising topic, but one that still needs to be approached with caution.

📈 Fuel prices are once again under pressure in Belgium.

One of the measures currently being discussed is the so-called inverse cliquet.

In practical terms, this could reduce part of the excise burden in order to limit the impact of rising prices.

For professional diesel users, this is not only about the price at the pump.
It can also affect the recoverable excise duty, which has a direct impact on cost monitoring and recovery calculations.

The key message for enerdrive users is simple. If such a mechanism is officially implemented, the impact on recoverable excise duty will be automatically handled in enerdrive.
