🌪️ Storm Austen is making waves… and our containers are caught in the middle!

Storm Austen is bringing severe weather, and the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam are already experiencing disruptions.

⚠️ Vessel traffic has been suspended, preventing ships from entering or leaving the ports, while some terminals have already temporarily suspended operations.

What does this mean for container transport? 🚛

With vessels unable to enter or leave the ports and some terminals suspending operations, delays are expected. This will likely also impact next week’s transport schedule, meaning some planned trips may need to be rescheduled.

We’re closely monitoring the situation and doing everything we can to minimise the impact on your shipments. We’ll keep our customers informed of any changes to their planned transport.

🚛 5 HOURS IN THE TERMINAL. WHO PAYS THE PRICE?

The situation at ECT, APM Terminals and RWG in Rotterdam is becoming increasingly challenging for transport companies like us

Finding an available time slot is already difficult, with slots often fully booked or barely available. And even when you manage to secure one, the real waiting game can begin.

At ECT, a visit normally takes around 1 to 3 hours, but on many days, this can increase to 5–6 hours. With a handling rate of approximately 6–10 containers per hour, queues of more than 40 trucks can cause significant delays. On top of that, technical issues such as cranes not working, make the situation even more unpredictable.

And the rules? Arriving before your booked time slot can result in a €100 penalty, leaving little room for flexibility.

For transport companies, this means our trucks and drivers are tied up for hours. For customers, it means delays and less certainty. Our standard rates include one hour for picking up and one hour for dropping off, yet we choose not to pass these additional waiting-time costs on to our customers.

But these delays still have a cost. They affect planning, efficiency and the entire supply chain.

When Terminal Upgrades Create New Challenges for Transport. 🚧

Automation and modern infrastructure can improve efficiency, but they also need to work in practice for the transport companies and drivers who keep the supply chain moving.

Terminal 869 in Antwerp is a good example. Project Emerald is being implemented in several phases, with the introduction of automated cranes gradually changing terminal operations and slot availability depending on which crane handles the container.

In some cases, a driver needs two separate slots to drop off one container and pick up another. This means double slot costs, extra waiting times and less efficient use of trucks and drivers.

We welcome investments in technology and better terminal operations. The next step is ensuring that these improvements also lead to smoother processes for road transport.

Real progress means making the entire supply chain more efficient, not just one part of it.

Another Step Forward in Our Digital Transformation

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving efficiency and customer service, we have recently started an EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) integration with one of our key customers.

This integration allows transport orders to be transmitted directly into our system, reducing manual processing, minimizing the risk of errors, and speeding up communication between both parties.

The project is currently in the testing phase, but we are pleased to say that the results so far have been very promising and the integration is already performing well.

Dutch Truck Toll from 1 July 2026

The new Dutch truck toll will come into effect on 1 July 2026, replacing the Eurovignette and increasing transport costs on many routes.
