On 29 May 2026, brass bands from across the world descended on Saddleworth and Tameside for what is often called the Greatest Free Show on Earth!

Made famous by the film *Brassed Off*, Whit Friday sees 22 villages host traditional brass band marching contests, a unique event with roots stretching back well over a century. We camped in Friezland with the Caravan and Motorhome Concert Band, whose members have come together to form a contesting brass band for the occasion. Remarkably, some of the woodwind players have been learning brass instruments specifically to take part in this event.

On Friday morning, four members of the band—including myself—accepted an invitation from Uppermill Brass Band to join them on the historic Whit Friday morning walks. It was a fantastic opportunity to experience one of the most treasured traditions of the day. The main contest begins at 4pm and continues until 11pm, with bands travelling between villages to perform and compete in an event that has been running since around 1880.

Join me as I explore the local area, help prepare the band for the contest, and take on the famous Whit Friday morning walk. Not everything goes to plan, however, as an unexpected injury threatens to derail the day! If you enjoy brass bands, local traditions, motorhoming/caravanning, or behind-the-scenes event coverage, this is an episode you won't want to miss.
