During major floods, Iguaçu Falls can look completely different.

After periods of heavy rain, the river rises dramatically and the water can take on a reddish or brownish color. This happens because the powerful current carries soil particles and sediments containing iron oxides.

The region around Iguaçu Falls is shaped by volcanic rocks, mainly basalt, which have contributed to the formation of the local soils. These soils are rich in minerals and naturally contain significant amounts of iron oxides.

Meet the Rufous Hornero, Brazil’s little architect 🐦🤎

Have you ever stopped to look at one of those little mud nests you see around Brazil? Chances are, a Rufous Hornero built it.

This small bird is always busy. You’ll often see it walking on the ground, searching for insects, larvae, and other tiny creatures to eat. It’s simple, natural, and very effective.

🏠 And then there’s the nest…

The Rufous Hornero builds its nest almost entirely from mud, shaping it into a strong little home with a clever entrance and an inner chamber where it raises its chicks.

What’s even more fascinating is that the pair works together. They build, repair, and sometimes reuse their nest, turning a handful of mud into a safe place for their family.

🌿 They can be found in fields, gardens, pastures, open areas, and even around our homes.
