Can you walk to Christ the Redeemer? It’s a question we get a lot from guests on our bike and pedicab tours.

Rio's St Benedict Monastery is the oldest (and goldest!) building in the city. Inaugurated in 1640, the monastery church's rococo interior is covered by gold leaf. Nobody knows how much gold exactly-though in an intensive 11-year restoration project concluded in 2015, artisans carefully applied 42,000 new sheets of gold leaf to repair a damaged section.

Despite the bible prescribing death for slave traders, the church was largely built by enslaved Africans.

The monastery has a lookout over the port area where marmoset (micos) often play, and is best visited late afternoon when the monks are found chanting.

O Mosteiro de São Bento, no Rio de Janeiro, é o edifício mais antigo (e mais dourado!) da cidade. Inaugurado em 1640, o interior rococó da igreja do mosteiro é coberto por folhas de ouro. Ninguém sabe exatamente quanto ouro foi usado, embora, em um intenso projeto de restauração de 11 anos, concluído em 2015, artesãos tenham aplicado cuidadosamente 42.000 novas folhas de ouro para reparar uma seção danificada.

Apesar da Bíblia prescrever a pena de morte para traficantes de escravos, a igreja foi construída em grande parte por africanos escravizados.

O mosteiro possui um mirante com vista para a área portuária, onde saguis costumam brincar, e a melhor hora para visitá-lo é no final da tarde, quando os monges estão cantando.

Today is Tiradentes Day in Brazil, a national holiday. Tiradentes was a republican from mineral-rich Minas Gerais in the 1700s. He advocated for Minas Gerais, though not necessarily all of Brazil, to become independent of Portuguese colonial rule. He was imprisoned in Rio de Janeiro, then the colonial capital, for 3 years before being hanged on 21 April 1792. His body was then cut into pieces, which were displayed on the sides of roads in Minas Gerais as a warning—brutal!

Almost 100 years later, when Brazil was finally declared a republic in 1889, Tiradentes was remembered as a martyr figure, The fact that the movement was led largely by self-interested local elites, who did not espouse social reforms like abolishing slavery, was largely downplayed as monuments across Brazil were named after him and he became a symbol of the fight for freedom and democracy.

In Rio de Janeiro the Tiradentes Palace was completed in 1926 and served as the home of the National Congress, and later as the home of Rio’s state Legislative Assembly.
