Green season definitely makes spotting animals a bit more of a challenge — the bush turns into a five-star hiding resort. But when you finally hit the jackpot, it feels like you’ve just won the safari lottery, and suddenly every second of searching was absolutely worth it.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this takeover, I know we have! It sure was fun to revisit some of the absolutely amazing memories we have from our time in Botswana with Walk Botswana Safaris…

For a group that has travelled quite a bit, this was truly a trip of a lifetime. We made unforgettable memories. We saw animals we’d never heard of. And we learned so much about a country and an environment we knew very little about.

It was fascinating and there’s nothing we would have changed about this trip! .hartleyflemix and are a class act and we feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work and learn from them. So much so that we’re hoping to head to Madagascar with them next year!

There are many more stories to tell and photos to share, so we will be back! Stay tuned…

Botswana has some really amazing… BIRDS!

I’m not a “birder”, I think birds are fine, but I’m not going to go out of my way to seek them out. And we were blown away by all of the unique winged friends we saw while on safari!

Check out these fun facts:

💜 Violet Breasted Roller - these guys are known for the acrobatic courtship displays!
🧡 Pels Fishing Owl - often considered a “holy grail” bird due to its elusive nature.
❤️ Saddle-Billed Stork - these guys are the tallest stork species in Africa!
🤍 African Fish Eagle - these birds have been known to eat crocodiles!
💚 Malachite Kingfisher - expert fish catchers that are monogomous and live by the water.
💙Goliath Heron - the largest living heron standing at 1.5 meters tall
🤎 Kori Bustard - the heaviest flighted bird in the world!

I had heard that Africa is “loud” at night, and it’s definitely not quiet! On our first night in Moremi, we were woken up in our tent by an elephant munching away right next to us. She was so close we could hear her teeth grinding as she chewed on the branches she’d found. All the while, we could hear the whoops of brown hyenas talking to each other in the distance. The animal action is constant.

Each day we were out in the bush, exploring, and it never got old. There was always something new to experience and fascinating things to learn. On our first full day in Moremi, we were out in the early evening when Gareth pulled over to point out tracks from a pack of wild dogs. We tracked them for a while, hoping for a glimpse, but eventually, they disappeared. Turns out wild dogs are a rare sight, so we were eager to see them.

Not long after, Gareth got a call from one of his good friends and fellow guides. The wild dogs had turned up in his camp and taken down a Lechwe (a type of antelope). Gareth turned the truck around, and we sped off to catch the action!

It was absolutely worth it. As we pulled up three wild dogs were devouring their kill, their faces covered in blood with distended, full bellies. They were so content, taking breaks from eating to lie down and sometimes play!

As dusk settled in, the dogs became increasingly skittish. Turns out, they don’t see well at night, so eventually, they scampered off to sleep. And that’s when a solitary leopard swooped in, dragging the rest of the carcass up a tree to enjoy it in peace.

You really can’t make this stuff up!

We spent four days and three nights in the Kalahari Desert, the second-largest desert in Africa. When we first chatted with Robyn, we made it clear that one of our top priorities for the trip was to experience the Botswana bush in its most natural state. As Gareth put it perfectly: “Exclusivity is the new luxury.” And Walk Botswana Safaris definitely delivered.

But what really made this experience special was Gareth. It wasn’t just about the animals for him—his knowledge of the local flora and fauna was incredible! We bombarded him with questions, and not only did he answer them all, he loved every minute of it. His insights helped us appreciate every encounter and lesson along the way.

While the Kalahari is known for being dry with fewer animals, we still had some truly unforgettable encounters:

🐦 Ostriches – A whole group of them running through the brush, shaking their tail feathers!

🐾 Lion tracks – We found what looked like tracks from two males who had strolled down the same road earlier.

🐿️ South African Ground Squirrel – These little guys were ridiculously cute and didn’t seem to mind us one bit.

🐗 Warthogs – Definitely one of my favorites! Check out that adorable baby!

👀 Elephant tracks – Not what I expected, but these circular footprints looked like gigantic fingerprints.

🐘 Elephants – After our afternoon tour, we were heading back when we noticed two bull elephants walking in the same direction. Gareth pulled into camp, and we immediately set off on foot to try and catch up. Seeing these massive animals walk by, so close that we made eye contact, was unforgettable. The thrill of silently moving through the brush to get as close as we could was absolutely exhilarating!

But the cherry on top? A solo aardwolf at dusk. We knew it was something special when Gareth pulled out his huge camera to snap some pics. Watching it run through the brush was absolutely majestic! Fun fact: Aardwolves can munch through 200,000 to 300,000 termites in a single night! 🐜
