TRAVEL TIP TUESDAY: IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR FAMILIES TRAVELLING TO MEXICO

Planning a family vacation to Mexico? There’s a potential change you’ll want to keep on your radar!

On October 7, 2026, Mexico’s Senate approved legislation that could introduce new requirements for hotels and resorts to verify the relationship between adults and children under 18 travelling with them.

The goal is to help protect children from trafficking and exploitation.

So, what does this mean for your next family vacation?

The proposed requirements could affect families travelling with one parent, grandparents, other relatives, or family friends.

What documents should you consider bringing?
Birth certificates showing the child’s parents’ names

Custody or guardianship documents, if applicable

Parental consent letters, especially if a child is travelling with only one parent or another adult
Depending on your circumstances, having a notarized consent letter may also be worth considering.

IMPORTANT: These are precautionary recommendations, not a confirmed list of required documents. We’re still waiting for official confirmation of when the legislation will take effect and exactly what hotels will require.
These potential hotel check-in rules are also separate from existing passport and immigration requirements.

Should you panic? Absolutely not. Should you stay informed? Definitely!

If you have a Mexico vacation coming up, there’s no need to scramble for paperwork just yet. I’ll be watching for official updates and sharing more as details become available.
