This is, unfortunately, nothing new in the horse world. Especially for those who drive their horses on public roads (like us!). It is a long training process to train horses to be calm in such situations meaning horses who are not yet confident around traffic need to experience traffic in order to learn they are not going to get hurt. A real catch-22!
In Ontario it is the motorized vehicle driver's legal responsibility to ensure the horses remain calm on public roads, which may include pulling over and turning off their vehicle until the horse is under control again.
There have been many examples of unsafe driving around our team and many other horses which have been driven by our team of drivers. Not stories we ever want to relive. Please everyone take the time to pass wide and slow any time you encounter horses on the road!
