Yesterday, I had the privilege & honour of being awarded the ACSA-Alberta Construction Safety Association’s Pacesetter Award for the Calgary area for 2023. The award represents commitment to the ACSA’s Regional Safety Committees as well as commitment to improving worker health & safety by leading out in initiatives that promote a heightened awareness and foster the growth of positive safety cultures.
To say that I care passionately about what I do would most likely be an understatement. And one might wonder what is it that I do to merit such recognition. Everyone has a passion, or personal mission statement. Mine is to bridge the gap between transportation compliance and the requirements stemming from OHS legislation in Alberta. 3 years ago, Kyle Jordan and Charlotte painted a picture that these two worlds were like kissing cousins. I took that, ran with it, and started positing the idea that instead of kissing cousins, integrating National Safety Code (NSC) and Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) standards transforms a carrier’s health & safety system to an even more holistic one when you consider the hazards one addresses are the same regardless of compliance. How they’re managed is the difference, but even then, it’s minimal.
To that end, I’ve leveraged our company’s position as a type of industry Switzerland to help facilitate those conversations. We hold our COR with the ACSA due to our client listing. I also am pursuing full COR Auditor status with the Alberta Motor Transport Association to help grow that program & lead out in the idea that holistic health &/ safety systems CAN be possible if one’s willing to shift their own paradigms.
I am also a firm believer that the more education any motor carrier can have about what they need to succeed, the safer the roads will be. It’s why I will continue to advocate for COR/SECOR, but also the AMTA’s Certified Transportation Safety Professional program as well as the Industry Roadside Inspection Programs offered through the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance
This is me.
