A Look at Winnipeg’s International Trade Activities

According to Statistics Canada, Winnipeg, with its 5.7 Billion dollars of imports in 2012, ranks at number 10 amongst Canadian cities for import activities in dollar value. The city is also home to the 17th busiest Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) customs office in Canada.

Winnipeg is also home to the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, CentrePort Canada (an Inland Tri-modal port and Foreign Trade Zone) as well as over 39 different Customs Sufferance Warehouses and a second CBSA customs office located directly at the airport.

Duties on imports from the USA.

Customs duties are imposed based on a country of manufacture, not a country of export. Therefore if goods are shipped from the USA, they still can be dutiable, if made outside of North America.

Beware of Green Levy on imported vehicles.

If you are buying a new or used vehicle (models 2007-2013), make sure that you check if a Green Levy is applicable.

Excise Tax Act imposes an excise tax on certain fuel-inefficient vehicles (Green Levy). The fuel-inefficient vehicle tax will apply to automobiles (including station wagons, vans, and sport
utility vehicles) designed primarily for use as passenger vehicles.

Canada- European Union- Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)

Much will be said and written about Today’s announcement of the new CETA between Canada and the European Union. For example, nearly 100 percent of all EU tariff lines on non-agricultural products will be duty free on the first day CETA comes into force.

So the immediate first question that comes to mind is: When will CETA come into force? The answer is – 2015. According to sources, we have another two years to go before the coming into force of CETA. Until then, Dilas International will continue to monitor the progress of this historic agreement and will keep you informed on a regular basis.

IDENTICAL GOODS SELL FOR LESS IN THE UNITED STATES:

The Government of Canada recognized again this week in the Speech from the throne, that identical goods that are available in Canada Today, are cheaper in the United States. This statement has been true for decades, and our current Government is willing to try and change this reality. Until they are successful however, the fact remains that many consumer goods of all price ranges from baby diapers to books to vehicles, etc. are cheaper in the U.S.

Here is what the Governor General said about PRICES in Canada versus the US:
“And our Government will take additional action to protect Canadian consumers. Canadians… should not be charged more in Canada for identical goods that sell for less in the United States.”

How to avoid unexpected customs clearance surcharges from courier companies.

You’ve probably heard or read stories on the internet about situations where a person receives a parcel containing products purchased from outside of Canada. When the international parcel arrives at the client’s home, he/she is required to pay immediately unexpected COD charges for customs clearance, including the courier company’s processing fees, and all of this was done without your knowledge or approval.

Know that there is a way to avoid uncertainty and unpleasant surprises when purchasing goods abroad. You can hire your own licensed Canadian customs broker! At Dilas Intl customs brokers, we can help you determine (even before you order) the actual amounts to be paid when importing goods into Canada.

One of our areas of expertise is the customs clearance of small parcels and personal importations. Our brokerage fee for clearance of a package worth less than $1600.00 CDN is $25.00+tax+credit card fee. The amount of taxes payable depends on your province of residence, our credit card fee is 3.5% that is calculated on the tax amount payable. For example if you import US made goods worth $500.00 CDN to Ontario, the charges would be:

HST 13% - $65.00
Dilas brokerage fee – $25.00
Tax on brokerage service – $3.25
Credit card fee – $2.28

Grand total of $95.53

So before you order, you now know that the total value of the goods you wish to purchase comes up to $595.53.
