When the winter ice roads are open in northern Ontario, communities gather, connect, and celebrate. The Kematewan Winter Carnival, held on Moose Factory Island and in Moosonee in early March was a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate winter.

We were proud to support this important community event in partnership with Pomerleau. Seeing families, elders, and youth come together reminded us why supporting locally led initiatives matter.

“The festivities were remarkable. Our partnership with Pomerleau demonstrated the commitment by both companies to the communities where we operate. Seeing the children and Elders enjoy the activities was my personal favorite moment.”

✨ Building Skills, Confidence, and Community in Rankin Inlet ✨

At the end of February, Tangmaarvik played a vital role in Rankin Inlet by hosting a hands-on cooking class that brought together 19 students for a week of culinary learning and exploration.

Led by Chef Gabriel Belanger Francoeur, alongside Tangmaarvik’s own Samantha Saumik and Kayla Katokra, students gained valuable experience in:
🔹 Safe food handling
🔹 Kitchen safety practices
🔹 Fundamental culinary techniques
🔹 Confidence building through practical cooking activities

Throughout the week, students prepared an impressive variety of dishes - from Arctic char gravlax on cucumber rounds and garlic bannock au gratin to breakfast sandwiches, chicken cordon bleu, full-plated meals, and shared classroom feasts. A highlight for many was being able to bring leftovers home to share with their families.

This Task Week experience not only strengthened culinary skills, but also fostered teamwork, pride, and meaningful learning. Tangmaarvik is proud to support youth development, skills building, and strong community partnerships across the region.

👏 A huge thank you to everyone involved for creating such a positive and memorable experience for local youth!

Skills Building with Kitikmeot Camp Solutions at Agnico Eagle’s Hope Bay Site.

Kitikmeot Camp Solutions launched another Introduction to Hospitality program at Agnico Eagle’s Hope Bay Mine in late January 2026 - and our six participants are already making incredible progress.

With a safety‑first mindset, learners have been actively building their skills by identifying workplace hazards, strengthening their understanding of food safety, and applying operational procedures through hands‑on experience in both facility management and food services.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Agnico Eagle and the Kitikmeot Inuit Association for their continued support and partnership in making this program possible.

For over three years, Normand Jr. Kowtak worked with our Tangmaarvik team in the kitchen-catering department, consistently showing steady effort and a willingness to learn. Throughout his time with us, we were glad to offer support and guidance as he continued to develop his skills and confidence.

Recently, Normand secured a position with our client, a meaningful step forward in his career. This achievement reflects his persistence and the support he received along the way.

In his testimonial, Normand shared that this opportunity has already made a positive difference in his life. He mentioned being able to purchase a truck and a snowmobile, and with his new job, he now hopes to work toward owning a home.

We are pleased to see his progress and appreciative of the role our Horizon Nord team were able to play in his journey. Congratulations Normand, we wish you continued success in the future. 👏
