It is with great sadness that we share that Gordon Firkus has passed away at the age of 84.

A staple at the Chilliwack Airport and the in the aviation industry for many years, you could often find him in the shop, in the air, or at the Chilliwack Flying Club with many of his friends.

Growing up, while showing talent in the arts, Gord pursued a love of aviation through obtaining his Aircraft Maintenance Engineer license through Pacific Vocational Institute (now BCIT). Shortly thereafter, his entrepreneurial drive led him to partner with Jim Evans and open Kent Aviation where Gord was both a mechanic and commercial pilot. Gord's passion for fixing aircraft led him to founding Firkus Aircraft Servicing at Chilliwack Airport after they sold Kent Aviation not many years later. As the anchor shop at the airport, Gord was the go-to person for all things mechanical. After successfully leading the business for over 40 years, Gord retired in 2007 and passed the torch on to his oldest son, Ray, who continues the legacy of Firkus Aircraft in Chilliwack.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday January 24, 2026, at Henderson’s Funeral Home in Chilliwack. A reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Parkinsons Society or the Cancer Society.

It is with profound sadness that we share that our beloved dachshund, Max, has passed on. A favourite to all of those who visited the hangar, he was a sure-fire way to get a smile from anyone who came through the door. While his natural state was wrapped in a blanket or laying in a sunbeam, his favourite place to be was always with his people. Whether it was coming to work in the morning, a road trip in the truck, moving airplanes in the tug, waiting on the ramp, sharing the office chair or hanging out in the hangar after hours, it didn’t matter where in the world he was, as long as he had some of his favourite people (and snacks!). Thanks to all of you who made his life a little more special and took the time to say hello to him when you stopped by, it meant the world to us. He was an incredible light in our lives that we were so fortunate to be able to experience. He will be missed more than words can describe.

While we have a rolodex of photos of him that could probably sink a battle ship, if you snapped a photo or two of Max over the years, we would love to see your favourites.

SO YOU WANT TO BUY AN AIRPLANE? - Before You Shop Part 1

We always tell new buyers to first ask yourself the following questions even before you consider your budget:
- Why do you want the airplane?
- What type of flying do you want to do?
- How long do you plan to keep the aircraft?

Why do you want the airplane?
If it is because you want an avenue that is less expensive to build hours on your PPL, please go to your local flight school and rent a school airplane instead. If you have a need or a want to own an aircraft, you must decide what aircraft will best fit you needs and/or wants.

What type of flying do you want to do?
Different aircraft have different strengths and limitations. Most training aircraft are not the fastest. Quick high-performance aircraft do not make great trainers. Do you plan to operate on paved runways, or do you want to be able to get in and out of the field next to the cabin up north? Take into consideration how many seats you want, how fast you want to get to your destination, how far you will want to go between stops, etc.

How long do you plan to keep your aircraft?***
This one is super important and more often than not, something that is not thought about because if you are thinking about getting an aircraft, why would you be thinking about how you are going to get rid of it? If you don't take into consideration how you are going to get rid of it, you may be stuck with an aircraft that you can't sell. The cheap aircraft you found on Facebook Marketplace may be a steal of a deal because that’s the only way someone will buy it as it doesn’t fit the above-mentioned needs for other people. The more expensive aircraft that seems to be selling before you can even email the owner may be more expensive because it is extremely desirable for schools and private owners as it suits their needs more than any other aircraft.

Once you have some answers to the questions above, you want to look at your budget and what type of aircraft you can actually afford. There are many unknown costs to consider that new owners are often unaware of. Check back for part two when we go into cost considerations and your budget!

SO YOU WANT TO BUY AN AIRPLANE?

Welcome to our new series! We have noticed a huge influx of individuals wanting to purchase an airplane which is great! However, we are noticing that many individuals don't know where to begin, things to consider, how to go about doing it and either spend way more money because of things they didn't think about/know or just walking away from their airplane completely.

Over the next little while we are going to walk you though some steps we strongly encourage you to take and consider if you are looking to get into the market for an airplane!

Whether you are a brand new pilot looking for your first airplane or seasoned aircraft owner looking to add more to your fleet, we think there will be something in this series for you! Stay tuned!

We'd like to extend a massive shout out to the local aviation community for going above and beyond this past week. Hundreds of evacuation trips and supply drop offs were conducted by local operators and it was incredible to see this amazing industry make such a large impact.

Thank you to airport management and staff for handling an incredible influx of traffic so effectively and thank you to the local fire department, emergency services and responders for stepping up as always.

We're proud to be a part of these communities.
