Obon Festival is an annual Japanese holiday that commemorates and remembers the deceased ancestors.

Lanterns (Chochin) are hung and fires are lit to guide the spirits and there are special Obon festivals throughout the country.

Obon week is in mid-August for the majority of Japan (Aug. 13 - 15) and is one of the three major holiday seasons making it the busiest time of year for domestic travel.

TIP: For international travellers, try avoiding this week for less tourism traffic and high occupancy rates/prices at accommodations.

Are you planning to travel around Japan in the next 3 months? If so, purchase your Japan Rail Pass NOW. Starting October 1st, the pass will increase by 65 - 77%! (Example: Ordinary 7-Day Pass 29,650 JPY to 50,000 JPY/Green 7-Day Pass 39,600 JPY to 70,000 JPY)

Are you heading to Japan soon? Please note the Suica card is currently unavailable due to chip shortage. However, there are alternatives for visitors (Welcome Suica*) and those who are travelling to different regions, they have their own IC Cards that are currently still available...and yes you can use it throughout Japan.

*Welcome Suica: It is only valid for 28 days. No deposit, but no refunds on the remaining amount (so use it up before you leave!). Due to temporary suspensions, it is only available at Haneda and Narita airports.

As of April 29, 2023, Japan is now officially open for travel with no covid regulations! People have been waiting to visit this beautiful country for many years and the demand is higher than ever. ANOTHER BREAKING NEWS! Canada is dropping all COVID-19 measures on Oct. 1, 2022!

All travellers, regardless of citizenship, will no longer have to:

- submit public health information through the ArriveCAN app or website;
- provide proof of vaccination;
- undergo pre- or on-arrival testing;
- carry out COVID-19-related quarantine or isolation;
- monitor and report if they develop signs or symptoms of COVID-19 upon arriving to Canada.

Transport Canada is also removing their requirements, where travellers will no longer be required to:
- undergo health checks for travel on air and rail; or
- wear masks on planes and trains.
