Finding the source of a problem is only part of the equation. The next step is determining how far the solution needs to go.

In this case, a steering system losing hydraulic fluid and pressure was traced back to pinhole leaks in sections of the copper piping. After assessing the larger system, a targeted repair made sense — but the same symptoms on another vessel could lead to a very different recommendation.

Condition, reliability, serviceability, and parts availability all play a role in determining whether it makes sense to repair what's there or consider a larger upgrade.

Why do we sand props?

Propellers may be cleaned, sanded or ground for several reasons:

🐚 Removing marine growth, scale, or corrosion helps create a smoother surface, reducing drag and the risk of vibration or cavitation.
🩹 Sanding can smooth small scratches, rough edges, and light pitting before they develop into larger concerns.
⚖️In some cases, a qualified technician may remove very small, controlled amounts of material as part of the balancing and reconditioning process.

Inspecting and cleaning your propellers during routine bottom maintenance can help identify wear early, protect their service life and support better cruising performance.

A well-designed installation should consider more than how a system fits today. It should also consider how it will be accessed, maintained, and eventually repaired or replaced.

This watermaker was installed on slide rails, allowing the entire system to move forward for easier access to the membranes and electrical panel behind it. It’s a relatively simple design decision that can make routine servicing significantly easier throughout the life of the system.

This navigation upgrade came with a big checklist.

Outdated equipment and wiring were removed as the helm was redesigned around a fully integrated Garmin system. New navigation displays, radar, sonar, autopilot, AIS and VHF now work alongside engine data, cameras and vessel monitoring—all supported by updated controls and a vessel-wide communications network.

With connected access extending beyond the helm and into the master stateroom, the result is more than a visual transformation. It’s a cleaner, more capable navigation experience throughout the vessel.
