At least 7 dead, dozens injured in explosion and fire at CFB Wainwright
At least seven people are dead and dozens more injured after an explosion occurred during an exercise at CFB Wainwright in central Alberta,
Officials called a "code orange" response protocol in Edmonton to help care for a high number of patients coming from the base, while the general public was asked to avoid the University of Alberta Hospital emergency department.
I've spent time at CFB Wainwright, and can speak to its massive size. It is the largest ground training facility in Canada's Armed Forces, where troops have come from across the country to face realistic battlefield exercises for generations.
The training is inherently dangerous, but CAF trainers use well-established ground rules to make the exercises as safe as possible. The military often uses live fire at CFB Wainwright, and that means it has storage facilities for explosive material β€” everything from tank shells to material used to breach walls. There has been no indication that explosives were a factor here, but it is important to understand for context.
The training can be in open fields, forested areas or buildings constructed to replicate urban warfare conditions.
Training exercises always have medical personnel in attendance. We are told there was a large number of patients, and it is likely the in-the-field teams were quickly overwhelmed.
