Once the family has determined what they would like to keep, our experienced team donates everything we physically can to keep items up-cycling through community donation organizations. With our large team, we can usually downsize (for real estate photos) or empty a house completely in one day allowing for a faster real estate sale.

This is a little different from what we normally share here, but it is an important conversation.

After caring for her husband, Carl Dean, Dolly Parton spoke about something many caregivers may quietly understand: while focusing so much of her attention on the person she loved, some of her own health needs took a back seat - and she was far from alone.

More than 75% of caregivers surveyed by CARP said they find it challenging to care for their own mental and physical health.

We see the weight caregivers carry every day. When you're constantly asking, "What do they need?" it can be very easy to stop asking, "What do I need?"

If there's a caregiver in your life who could use this reminder today, please share this with them.

When someone has lived in a home for 20, 30 or 40+ years, you’re not simply packing belongings into boxes.

Trying to squeeze all of the work of a move into the final few weeks can turn an already emotional transition into an unnecessarily stressful one.

The more time you give your parent, the more time they have to make decisions without feeling rushed.

If your family already knows a move is happening this fall, this is your sign to start the conversation now.

We're not always preparing for a move.

In this case, the family was faced with clearing out a loved one's apartment — a space still filled with the everyday belongings, familiar rooms and little reminders of a life lived there.

Sometimes our job is helping someone move into their next home and sometimes it’s helping a family close the door on one. We're here to help with every chapter you may be facing.

Living hours away from your parents doesn’t mean you’re any less involved in their move.

There are things you can coordinate over the phone and then there are the things that require someone to actually be there.

For many of the families we work with, the adult children live outside Niagara and simply can’t make the drive every time something needs to be done, which is why having trusted, local support makes a difference.

None of these signs necessarily mean your parents need to move tomorrow.

They might mean it’s time to start talking about what happens when they do.

Here are 5 signs we wouldn’t overlook:

🔹 Even an occasional “We don’t need all this space anymore” can be an opening for a bigger conversation.
🔹 The house is starting to feel like more work than home.
🔹 They’re looking at retirement communities, talking about where friends have moved or wondering what a smaller home might look like.
🔹 Giving things away, asking who wants what, or saying, “What are you going to do with all of this someday?” are conversations worth paying attention to.
🔹 Nobody actually knows what the plan is.

The important word here is START.

Starting can simply mean having the conversation, understanding your parents’ wishes, looking at the amount of work involved and beginning to make a plan.

If some of these signs sound familiar, we can help your family start planning long before moving day arrives.

If you know, you know!

The "For Dummies" books had an answer for EVERYTHING - computers, finances, home improvement and we can confirm that after helping with enough moves and clear-outs, they also ended up in a LOT of homes.

The part about books that people often underestimate when downsizing: they get heavy, fast (especially the ones in this series).

Books are a great category to start sorting before a move is on the immediate horizon. Keep the ones you still use or genuinely want, ask family if there are meaningful ones they'd like, and start looking into appropriate donation for the rest.

Yes, we really do go through everything.

When we're helping to downsize or clear a home, every box, drawer, cupboard, closet and storage bin has to be addressed eventually. With that comes an understanding that what’s inside can be personal, sentimental, valuable, or sometimes completely unexpected.

Experience has taught us when to slow down and take a closer look. If we come across something that may have value, significance or another potential option, we bring it to the attention of the family or person overseeing the move.

It’s a very personal part of what we do, and one we approach with care and discretion.
