You may have seen that a recent study by web analytics firm SEO Backlinks ranked Gander International Airport first among 35 Canadian airports based on Google reviews, with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Some have interpreted this as meaning Gander offers the best airport experience in Canada. Absolutely not.

Google reviews are not a scientific measure of airport performance. There are very sophisticated surveys that benchmark passenger satisfaction, and this isn't one of them, nor does it claim to be.

Keeping that Google score in perspective, there are a few things working in our favour.

For one, there's strength in being small. YQX is an easy airport to get to and through, with short walks, short lines, familiar faces and less stress-inducing crowding.

The bigger thing is the people. Across the various customer service touchpoints here, we have exceptionally capable people who are good at what they do. They also bring that unpretentious, friendly, distinctly Newfoundland brand of hospitality you can't get from a training manual. Combine competence and genuine friendliness, and you've got a winning formula.

Finally, we've made a deliberate effort to offer something beyond the usual airport experience. Reopening our historic International Lounge to the public more than four years ago was about sharing an important piece of aviation history and architecture with Gander and its visitors. But the second motivation was knowing it would add value to the passenger journey. Today, visitors and passengers alike can enjoy the exhibits, art gallery, theatre, gift shop and food offerings.

None of this makes us a perfect airport or solves the very real challenges we face. There's a lot to do to deliver the experience we want at YQX. It begins and ends with strengthening air service, but there are also opportunities to improve ground transportation, terminal amenities and concessions.

So no victory lap here. That said, if there were ever surveys in the following categories, we'd be the undisputed national champs:

We’ll miss Jerry Cramm.

After serving 40 years as a Commissionaire at Gander International Airport, Jerry’s worked his last shift. It’s honestly hard to imagine the place without him.

Anyone who knows Jerry understands how kind, capable and personable he is. He’s a colourful character and a terrific storyteller, so it’s no surprise he became a celebrated Gander Airport ambassador. If a tour group or visiting journalist needed someone to show them around and share a few stories, Jerry found time to oblige.

He’s welcomed many people through these doors over four decades, and we’ve been lucky to have him here through good times and bad. Jerry could be consistently counted on to do his best to help, no matter the situation.

He’s made the daily commute from Embree for four decades, and we hope he enjoyed waking up this morning without that drive ahead of him.

Jerry, it’s been a pleasure working with you. All your friends at YQX wish you a long and happy retirement.

WANTED: WINTER WARRIORS

We’re seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator (Mobile Device Operator) for an 18-week winter term at Gander International Airport.

Applicants must have:
• A Class 3 driver’s licence with an air brake endorsement
• Proof of high school graduation
• The ability to work as part of a team, including shifts, weekends and overtime

The successful candidate must hold or be able to obtain a radio operator’s licence and transportation security clearance. Airport Firefighter certification training may also be required.

Salary and benefits are as provided in the current collective agreement.

It's Airport Workers Day, and in Gander, it carries a special meaning. ✈️

For generations, aviation has been at the heart of our community. From our beginnings as a strategic airbase in the 1930s to earning the title of the “Crossroads of the World,” Gander’s history has been shaped by the people who keep our airport running.

Today, we recognize the dedicated workers of Gander International Airport. Those who helped guide aircraft across the Atlantic during WWII, welcomed thousands of stranded travellers during 9/11, and continue to connect Gander, our region, and Newfoundland and Labrador with the world.

Thank you for your dedication, professionalism, and service.
