WestJet strike. Plans changed. Rules mattered. Flexibility mattered. Having a team mattered.
August 2. A few minutes after midnight, I’m refreshing emails waiting for the cancellation notice everyone knew was coming but hoped wouldn’t.
97 minutes later: cancellation confirmed.
134 minutes later: the revised itinerary arrives. It doesn’t get us there in time for our long-planned, already-paid-for activities. And it doesn’t follow the rules.
So we pivot.
Flights booked from a completely different airport. Hotels called. Transportation rearranged. Early-morning messages flying between our travel advisor team and fellow travelers while we’re also helping clients through their own travel nightmares.
Our itinerary became a giant game of travel Tetris.
A simple drive to Vancouver became an early-morning drive to another advisor’s house, leaving my car behind, a ride to Bellingham, a bus to Seattle and a red-eye to Florida.
After two hours at the border, we made the bus with minutes to spare.
I had been awake since 8 AM Saturday.
We hadn’t eaten since breakfast.
The flight is mostly a blur. I remember getting the boys settled, making sure the flight attendants knew they were mine because we had the last three seats on the plane, putting on a movie...
Then waking up when the drink cart bumped my elbow.
We landed in Florida.
Early.
We made it to surf camp.
On time.
Not because the original plan survived. It didn’t.
We got there because we stayed flexible, knew the rules, adjusted quickly, communicated constantly and had a team.
That’s the part of travel planning you don’t always see.
Sometimes the value of a travel advisor isn’t preventing every problem.
It’s knowing what to do when the plan falls apart.
And apparently, sometimes that means 30 hours, no sleep, a shuttle bus, a border crossing and a whole lot of Plan B.
