Pedestrians make up one of the largest groups of vulnerable road users in Canada, accounting for a significant share of road fatalities.

Kids are among the most vulnerable road users. They are smaller, less aware of driver actions, and more likely to mis-step as they learn to navigate busy spaces like school zones. Lower speeds give drivers more time to react/stop and prevent serious outcomes.

So, the signs will show up again! Schools will continue to use them whenever their school zone is feeling unsafe, so pay attention and always drive like your children are here! 🛑

As part of Canada Road Safety Week (May 12-18), students across Waterloo region are leading a campaign to make school areas safer for everyone. 🚸

A Canadian study of 216 school zones found that when speed limits were reduced from 50 km/h to 30 km/h, collisions involving injuries or fatalities decreased by 45%, and injuries involving children dropped by 55% 🛑

Students are reminding drivers of this simple message: drive slow and obey posted speeds 🚦
