This is the question we get more than any other, and the honest answer is that it depends on how you use your pool.

Gas heats fast and does not care how cold the air is, which makes it right for weekend properties and shoulder-season swimming. A heat pump costs far less per hour to run but needs warm air to pull from, which makes it right for pools that stay at temperature all season. Get this decision wrong and you either overpay every month or wait three hours for a swim.

A single-speed pump has one setting: full blast, all day, whether your pool needs it or not.

It is the single biggest power draw on most properties after heating and cooling.
