Cold plunge went from a niche thing a few athletes did to something we now get asked about every week, and October is when the questions spike.

The appeal is straightforward: hot sauna, then cold water, then back again, and most people describe feeling noticeably better afterward. What people do not expect is that a proper plunge tub with its own chiller is far easier to live with than hauling bags of ice, and it holds temperature year round instead of only in winter.

These two things get sold as the same product and they are not remotely the same experience.

A traditional sauna heats the air to 80 or 90 degrees and you pour water on rocks for steam. An infrared cabin heats your body directly at around 50 to 60 degrees, which most people find far easier to sit in for long stretches. Neither one is better. They suit different people, and the deciding factors are usually how hot you actually like it, how long you want to stay in, and what power you have available.

Two very different products get called the same thing, and picking the wrong one is an expensive lesson.

A winter cover is a tarp held down with water bags. It is cheap, it works, and you will likely replace it every three or four seasons. A safety cover anchors into the deck, holds the weight of a person, sheds snow load, and lasts ten to fifteen years. If you have kids, pets, or a pool you would rather not think about until May, the safety cover is the answer and the cost per season is lower than it looks.

The cover goes on the pool and most backyards go quiet until May.

That is roughly eight months of a space you paid for sitting unused. It is the single best argument for a hot tub or a sauna, and it is why our wellness side gets busy exactly when the pool side slows down.
