It's International Volkswagen Bus Day! To celebrate, our video and article on driving Kindred Motorworks' EV Bus prototype just dropped. We, Andy Lilienthal and Mercedes Lilienthal, were one of the first media outlets to drive this one-of-one electric.

No matter where you go in the world, the classic Volkswagen Bus—the Type 2 especially—is an icon. Now, Kindred Motorworks of Vallejo, CA, near San Francisco, is taking this legend and giving it new life. That includes a full restoration and all-electric power (last photo shows Kindred's EV setup on a Bronco chassis).

The VW EV Bus is a 60-year-old restomod that takes the Bus from what was, just over 50 HP to 294 HP, with a complete rebuild/restore, 23-window conversion, and many creature comforts original bus owners could only imagine. We're at Kindred Motorworks in San Francisco and just spent the day with their EV Bus Tailgate Edition prototype! We drove it on highways and byways and it got ALL the stares.

We, Andy Lilienthal and Mercedes Lilienthal, were invited as a select group of journalists to tour the Kindred Motorworks manufacturing headquarters on Mare Island, too. Lots going on in their 100,000 square-foot facility. Video and articles about our experience coming soon!

Here a few engineers show us this iconic classic's new features, show us its EV system, and key storage areas. Next up? We take to the streets with this one-of-one EV machine.
