176,000 finger blood tests.
63,875 insulin needles.
35,000 hours carb counting.
12,775 hours of exercise...and too many hours of trying to eat healthy...
As a Type 1 Diabetic, I am so proud to be a very small part of this historic day!
My grandmother was a Type 1 Diabetic and back then, they didn’t even have blood glucose testing. Only urine sticks.
She had to boil her insulin needles and her insulin was beef and pork.
We have come so far over the last 35 years with technology. My Dexcom G6 constant glucose monitoring system gives me my sugar levels directly to my iPhone, and my Insulet Omnipod Insulin Pump, allows me to deliver insulin at the touch of a button. They have both given me, and others like me, the ability to live our dreams.
Today, after years of meetings with Transport Canada, the very first Type 1 diabetic flew as a First Officer with Air Canada Jazz...
Canada is leading the world!
I am so honored to be on the flight with First Officer Austen McDonald and I sincerely congratulate him and Air Canada Jazz for making history.
Working with Steven Steele, Ed MacDonald, Diabetes Canada and few other dedicated people, we were able to achieve a goal I never thought possible...
..a dream that I was told would never be available to type 1 diabetics.
