An interesting article from The Atlantic that explains the theories as using improv as a form of therapy.

“The beauty of improv,” he said , “is that it is quintessentially a collective, cooperative form that rests completely on trust for the spark of creativity that can transport the players, briefly, into confidence-building interpersonal connections.”

Some psychologists think so.

Had a great training with the leadership team of the International Civil Aviation Organization of the United Nations. I collaborated with the Ethics Officer to integrate applied improvisation techniques to explore the theme of personal, political, and organizational narratives and how this relates to conflict resolution. It was a great experience, and I feel grateful to be part of such an important initiative.
