On International Day for Women in Maritime 2026, we salute the women across CSL and the maritime world who keep things moving – on board and at ashore.

Their impact is real and growing: women now represent 38% of our workforce and executive team, with 29% in senior leadership.

On board, women make up 6.3% of our Canadian crews including four captains.

We’re encouraged by the progress, but there’s more to do. We’re staying focused on keeping that momentum going by opening doors, removing barriers, and creating more opportunities across our industry.

À l’occasion de la Journée internationale des femmes dans le secteur maritime 2026, nous saluons les femmes de CSL et de l’industrie maritime qui font avancer les choses – à bord comme à terre.

Leur impact est bien réel et en croissance : elles représentent 38 % de nos effectifs et de notre équipe exécutive, dont 29 % dans des postes de direction.

À bord, les femmes comptent pour 6,3 % de nos équipages canadiens, dont quatre capitaines.

Our Montreal OFFICE INTERNS have only been with us a few weeks, but they’re already MAKING AN IMPACT!

They’re bringing fresh ideas and great energy, and have quickly become part of the team – working across technical operations, commercial, legal, procurement and finance.

It’s great to see them discover the marine industry in a hands-on way and grow more confident each day.

From what they’ve shared, they’re learning a lot, enjoying the CSL vibe, and feeling well supported.

We’re off to a fantastic start and looking forward to see how they’ll continue to make their mark this summer.

Ils apportent des idées novatrices et une énergie débordante, et se sont rapidement intégrés à l’équipe, travaillant dans les domaines des opérations techniques, des affaires commerciales, des affaires juridiques, de l’approvisionnement et des finances.

C’est formidable de les voir découvrir le secteur maritime sur le terrain et devenir chaque jour plus confiants.

A major milestone was reached on May 4 with the keel laying of CSL OWL SRI’s first of two subsea rock installation (SRI) vessels.

This pivotal step brings the vessel to life, as 116 individual blocks – each constructed, outfitted, and painted – begin to come together in final assembly.

Once completed, the vessel will measure 166.8 m in length and 40 m in width, with a cargo capacity of 17,500 tonnes and a top speed of 12 knots.

Equipped with advanced DP2 dynamic positioning system, it will operate on MGO or methanol and perform subsea rock installation in water depths of up to 100 m.

This milestone marks significant progress toward delivering new, specialized capacity to support the offshore renewables industry.

Une étape majeure a été franchie le 4 mai avec la pose de la quille du premier de deux navires d’installation de roches sous-marines (SRI) de CSL OWL SRI.

Cette étape déterminante donne vie au navire, alors que 116 blocs individuels – chacun construit, équipé et peint – commencent à être assemblés pour la phase finale.

Une fois achevé, le navire mesurera 166,8 m de longueur et 40 m de largeur, avec une capacité de chargement de 17 500 tonnes et une vitesse maximale de 12 nœuds.

Équipé d’un système de positionnement dynamique DP2 avancé, il pourra fonctionner au MGO ou au méthanol et réaliser des opérations d’installation de roche sous-marines à des profondeurs allant jusqu’à 100 m.

Achieving safer seas for whales – and cleaner air along our coasts – takes consistent, collective effort.

That continued focus has once again earned CSL the Sapphire Whale Tail Award from the California-based Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies Program, marking our fourth consecutive year at the highest level.

In 2025, our fleet achieved over 90% compliance with whale-safe speeds of 10 knots or less in designated zones and travelled more than 9,500 nautical miles at reduced speeds along the California coast.

Slowing down in these areas helps reduce the risk of ship strikes, lower underwater noise, and cut emissions.

It also reflects the everyday commitment of our crews to operating responsibly in some of the world’s most sensitive marine environments.

Assurer des mers plus sûres pour les baleines – et un air plus pur le long des côtes – exige des efforts constants et collectifs.

Cet engagement continu a permis à CSL de recevoir à nouveau le prix Sapphire Whale Tail du programme californien Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies, marquant notre quatrième année consécutive au plus haut niveau.

En 2025, notre flotte a atteint plus de 90 % de conformité aux vitesses sécuritaires pour les baleines (10 nœuds ou moins) dans les zones désignées et a parcouru plus de 9 500 milles marins à vitesse réduite le long de la côte californienne.

Réduire la vitesse dans ces zones contribue à diminuer le risque de collisions avec les baleines, à réduire le bruit sous-marin et à abaisser les émissions.

On May 3, CSL took part in a solemn tribute beside the Welland Canal in Port Colborne, honouring those who served and gave their lives during the BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC, including Canada Steamship Lines seafarers. Colin Kennedy, Senior Director, Technical Fleet Operations, spoke on behalf of CSL, paying tribute to their service, sacrifice, and enduring legacy.

MV FRONTENAC was docked nearby, and at the end of the tribute, Captain David Ogle offered a respectful master salute from the ship. The passage of MV BAIE ST. PAUL further marked the moment.

During WWII, 15 small CSL ships, nearly a quarter of the fleet, left their peacetime routes on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence to sail on vital Allied missions. Two CSL vessels, SS MAGOG and SS WATERLOO, were among the many Canadian merchant ships lost during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Thank you to The Royal Canadian Naval Association Niagara Region for hosting the tribute and ensuring the legacy of all who served is never forgotten.

Le 3 mai, CSL a pris part à un hommage solennel le long du canal Welland, à Port Colborne, afin d’honorer celles et ceux qui ont servi et donné leur vie lors de LA BATAILLE DE L’ATLANTIQUE, y compris les marins de Canada Steamship Lines. Au nom de CSL, Colin Kennedy, directeur principal, Exploitation technique de la flotte, a pris la parole pour rendre hommage à leur service et sacrifice.

Le MV FRONTENAC était amarré à proximité et, à la fin de l’hommage, le capitaine David Ogle a offert un salut du maître depuis le navire. Le passage du MV BAIE ST. PAUL est venu souligner davantage ce moment.

Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, 15 navires de CSL, près du quart de la flotte, ont quitté leurs routes paisibles sur les Grands Lacs et le fleuve Saint Laurent pour participer à des missions alliées essentielles. Deux navires de CSL, le SS MAGOG et le SS WATERLOO, figurent parmi les nombreux navires marchands canadiens perdus lors de la bataille de l’Atlantique.

Merci à l’Association navale royale du Canada, région de Niagara, d’avoir organisé cet hommage et de veiller à ce que le souvenir de toutes les personnes ayant servi demeure vivant.

A FRESH COAT OF PAINT does more than make our ships look good. It helps them perform better too.

This winter, MV CSL NIAGARA and MV BAIE ST. PAUL checked into drydock and came out looking sharp with new hull coatings. The work was carried out at Ontario Shipyards in Port Weller and at Groupe Océan’s facility in Les Méchins.

More than just cosmetic, the new coatings help prevent marine growth, reduce drag, and improve fuel efficiency during everyday operations.

They also provide an important layer of protection for the steel beneath the surface, helping extend the life of the vessels.

Over time, their fuel performance will show just how much difference a well-applied coat of paint can make.

UNE NOUVELLE COUCHE DE PEINTURE n'améliore pas seulement l'apparence de nos navires. Elle contribue également à optimiser leur performance.

Cet hiver, le MV CSL NIAGARA et le MV BAIE ST. PAUL sont passés en cale sèche et en sont ressortis resplendissants, dotés d'une nouvelle couche de peinture sur la coque. Les travaux ont été réalisés au chantier naval Ontario Shipyards à Port Weller et dans les installations du Groupe Océan à Les Méchins.

We recently marked another milestone in the CSL International Pool newbuild program with the naming of MV CSL KULEANA, the second CSL vessel in a series of five new Kamsarmax methanol-ready ocean self-unloaders.

Officially named at the shipyard by her godmother, Joanne Muther-Jones, KULEANA was chosen through a global employee naming contest. The name reflects a deep sense of responsibility and care for people and the environment – values that guide how we operate every day.

Our newbuild program is all about renewing our fleet with ships built for performance, efficiency, and more sustainable operations.

The start of a NEW NAVIGATION SEASON always brings a certain energy, and it’s great to see our ships and crews back at work across the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes.

For us, it’s not just about moving cargo. It’s about showing up every day with a clear focus on protecting people and the environment, and delivering for our customers in a way that’s reliable and sustainable. That mindset has carried us for nearly 200 years and still guides how we operate today.

Just as important is how we keep improving. Since 2021, our Great Lakes BIOFUEL PROGRAM has logged nearly 100,000 hours on B100, replacing 65,000 tonnes of fossil fuel and avoiding more than 200,000 tonnes of CO₂. This season, we’re focused on expanding it across the fleet to further reduce emissions and support cleaner shipping.

To all the seafarers heading back out on the water, THANK YOU for everything you do to keep vessels moving safely day in and day out. Wishing you a SAFE AND STRONG START TO THE SEASON – and the same to everyone across the industry!

CSL and Adbri recently celebrated the naming of MV YAMPU, a new purpose-built limestone carrier designed to support Adbri’s operations along the Australian coast.

Owned and operated by CSL, the vessel is built for high efficiency and will be the world’s first battery-powered self-unloading bulk carrier.

During the ceremony, the ship was officially named by its godmother, Marie-Josée Guérin. The name Yampu, chosen through an Adbri-wide employee process, comes from the Narungga and Kaurna languages of South Australia and refers to dolphins.

MV Yampu reflects the continued evolution of the CSL-Adbri partnership, built on trust, performance and a shared commitment to efficient and sustainable coastal shipping.

CSL et Adbri ont récemment célébré le baptême du MV YAMPU, un navire transporteur de calcaire conçu sur mesure pour soutenir les opérations d’Adbri le long de la côte australienne.

Détenue et exploité par CSL, le navire est conçu pour une grande efficacité et sera le premier vraquier autodéchargeant au monde capable d’opérer entièrement à batteries électriques.

As the 2026 navigation season approaches on the St. Lawrence Seaway, we celebrate the achievement of three new CSL captains preparing to take the helm of their first ships. Taking command is a defining moment in any seafarer’s career, reflecting years of dedication, experience, and hard work.

CAPTAIN AUDREY FOURNIER joined CSL in 2018 as a Third Officer, moving quickly through the ranks to Second Officer in 2019 and Chief Officer in 2020. After several years building experience, she earned her Master’s certification in 2025 and will take command of MV SPRUCEGLEN this season.

CAPTAIN FRANCIS LAVOIE began his career with CSL as a Cadet in 2012. He became a Third Officer in 2016, a Second Officer in 2018, and Chief Officer in 2020. In 2025, he obtained his Master’s certification and is now stepping into his first command with MV OAKGLEN.

CAPTAIN PHILIPPE JANVIER joined CSL as a Third Officer in 2018 and was promoted to Second Officer the following year. He became Chief Officer in 2021 and earned his Master’s certification in 2025. This season, he will be at the helm of MV CSL ASSINIBOINE.

Congratulations to Captains Fournier, Lavoie and Janvier! We wish them a safe and successful first season in command!

À l’approche de la saison de navigation 2026 sur la Voie maritime du Saint-Laurent, nous soulignons l’accomplissement de trois nouveaux capitaines de CSL qui s’apprêtent à prendre la barre de leur premier navire. Prendre les commandes constitue un moment déterminant dans la carrière de tout marin – reflet de nombreuses années de dévouement, d’expérience et de travail acharné.

CAPITAINE AUDREY FOURNIER s’est jointe à CSL en 2018 à titre de troisième officière, gravissant rapidement les échelons pour devenir deuxième officière en 2019, puis première officière en 2020. Après plusieurs années à acquérir de l’expérience, elle a obtenu son brevet de capitaine en 2025 et prendra les commandes du MV SPRUCEGLEN cette saison.

CAPITAINE FRANCIS LAVOIE a commencé sa carrière chez CSL en 2012 comme élève officier. Il est devenu troisième officier en 2016, deuxième officier en 2018, puis premier officier en 2020. En 2025, il a obtenu son brevet de capitaine et assumera maintenant son premier commandement à bord du MV OAKGLEN.

CAPITAINE PHILIPPE JANVIER s’est joint à CSL comme troisième officier en 2018 et a été promu deuxième officier l’année suivante. Il est devenu premier officier en 2021 et a obtenu son brevet de capitaine en 2025. Cette saison, il sera à la barre du MV CSL ASSINIBOINE.
