Flight Control Surfaces – What Moves & What Does It Do?

Ever wondered how an aircraft climbs, turns, banks and slows down? It all comes down to its flight control surfaces.

🔹 Ailerons – Control roll, allowing the aircraft to bank left or right.
🔹 Elevators – Control pitch, moving the aircraft’s nose up or down.
🔹 Rudder – Controls yaw, moving the nose left or right.
🔹 Flaps – Increase lift and drag, helping the aircraft operate safely at lower speeds during takeoff and landing.
🔹 Spoilers – Reduce lift and increase drag, assisting with descent, braking and slowing the aircraft after landing.
🔹 Slats – Located on the wing’s leading edge, helping maintain airflow and lift at slower speeds.

💡 Did you know? The Wright brothers used wing warping instead of modern ailerons to control roll on their early aircraft.

From the first powered flights to today’s advanced fly-by-wire aircraft, flight-control technology has come a long way.

Which flight control surface do you find most interesting?

How Does an Aircraft Engine Stay Cool?

Aircraft engines operate under extremely high temperatures, making an effective engine cooling system essential for safe and reliable operation.

As illustrated here, airflow is carefully directed around the engine to remove excess heat. Cooling baffles guide the incoming air across critical engine components, while differences between high- and low-pressure areas help maintain continuous airflow. The heated air is then discharged through the cowl flaps and cooling air exits.

Proper engine cooling helps:
🔧 Prevent overheating and component damage
✈️ Maintain engine performance and reliability
🛠️ Reduce unnecessary wear and maintenance
🛡️ Support safe aircraft operations

Aviation safety is built on many systems working together—and engine cooling is one of those essential systems that often goes unnoticed.

Did you know how airflow helps keep an aircraft engine within safe operating temperatures?

DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF FLIGHT?

A flight involves several carefully coordinated stages:

🛫 Take-off and departure
📈 Initial climb
🌍 En-route flight
📉 Descent and arrival
🛬 Final approach and landing

Throughout the journey, pilots communicate with different Air Traffic Control units, including Ground, Tower, Departure, Area Control and Approach, to maintain safe and orderly operations.

Which phase of flight interests you the most?

AVIATION SPOTLIGHT: CAN YOU SPOT THE DIFFERENCE?

The light on the left is an LED aircraft light, while the one on the right is a traditional sealed-beam halogen light.

💡 LED Light: Brighter, lower power consumption, longer service life and reduced maintenance requirements.
🔦 Halogen Light: Warmer light output, higher power consumption and a shorter operating life.

Upgrading aircraft lighting can improve visibility, reliability and operational safety especially during night operations and poor weather conditions.

Which type is installed on your aircraft?

Aircraft wings do much more than create lift.

On most modern commercial aircraft, a large portion of the fuel is stored inside the wings and this design serves several important engineering purposes.

Placing fuel in the wings helps:

🔹 Reduce bending stress at the wing roots
🔹 Balance the aircraft’s weight against the lift produced by the wings
🔹 Support aircraft system temperature management
🔹 Improve structural efficiency without compromising strength
🔹 Maintain proper balance as fuel is consumed during flight

Modern fuel systems carefully control which tanks supply the engines to keep the aircraft’s centre of gravity within safe limits. On some aircraft, fuel may also be transferred between tanks during flight to improve aerodynamic efficiency.

So, the fuel inside the wings does more than power the engines it also contributes to the aircraft’s balance, structural performance and overall efficiency.

What other hidden aircraft engineering features do you think most passengers never notice?

✈️ Aviation Safety Starts Before Takeoff

During aircraft refuelling, proper bonding and grounding are critical safety steps.

The bonding cable helps reduce static electricity between the fuel truck and aircraft, while the aircraft grounding point helps support safe refuelling operations.

A small step on the ground can prevent a big risk in the air.
