🧡 Orange Shirt Day is a national movement that takes place on September 30th. On this day, we remember and honour the children who were taken away to residential schools and reflect on the lasting impact this has had on Indigenous peoples. It is a time to come together in recognition, awareness, and support of the message that Every Child Matters as we continue the journey of Truth and Reconciliation.
🎨Orange Shirt Day Artist Spotlight:
My name is Rhiannon DeLuca, and I am a young Métis artist from District 3. It was a pleasure to create these Orange Shirt Day designs and bring meaningful stories and symbolism into the artwork. When developing the designs, I wanted to create something that was simple yet meaningful. I asked my mom for some inspiration, and the idea to incorporate Phyllis Webstad as her younger self came from her. Since Orange Shirt Day is rooted in Phyllis’s story, I felt this was a beautiful way to honour her experience. The second design represents the universal act of giving an orange shirt. I saw it as a connection between Phyllis’s grandmother giving her the orange shirt and people today continuing to give orange shirts as a symbol of remembrance, awareness, and solidarity. I hope these designs help honour Phyllis’s story while reminding us of the importance of continuing to listen, learn, and remember.
💰All proceeds from purchases made through Mountain West Promotions with the new design will go directly towards the Mountain View Moccasin House.
