Today's lovely weather had me thinking of baseball, Spring Training and Archie - a wonderful client and friend of ours who sadly passed away in January. I was fortunate enough to meet and become friends with Archie last summer. Archie was a huge baseball fan who also happened to coach his kids in a baseball game last summer against the What A Move team.

Archie had previously contacted me and wanted to know if we could deliver a bunch of items, and assemble some furniture at his family's new summer place near Brockville. He had one unusual request in that he wanted to know if his son, Tristan, could work with us for the day?

Not only were we delighted to add Tristan to our crew that day, but we also paid and outfitted him as if he was a crew member. Folks say that work isn't really work if you love you job. I'm fortunate in that I love my work and constantly meet great folks like Archie, his wife Kristal, and their sons.

Once the actual moving was done, the kids challenged our crew to a game of baseball. We should have known better.

Perhaps we should have declined the game - but how would it have looked if if we had said no to a bunch of kids just looking for a game of baseball? The What A Move crew are pretty athletic... and certainly seem like they wouldn't have any problems beating a bunch of kids in a baseball game. But, oh the humanity!

With Mom and Dad looking on, "The Sons of An Archie" put on an absolute baseball clinic that day. There was no mercy. They ran up the score until there was no more running to be done. The final score? Sons of An Archie 39 - What A Move! Stars 0

(A very accurate artistic rendering of the day is included with this post.)

Spring is almost here. And baseball will be back soon enough. Today, I am thankful for the friendships we made with Archie and his family, and for the new friendships to come.

We're fortunate at What A Move! that we get to meet all sorts of great people. And, of course we do all kinds of moves.

One of our busiest days in October found us installing furniture at a new downtown Ottawa Hotel, moving a lovely family into a 4 story 5 with Loft) walk up where one of our guys set a new company record for 150 (1) flights. That memorable day was topped off by a small evening move in Nepean where we helped a lovely lady move from her basement apartment of 8 years into a new apartment.

Part of what made that day so great was dealing with our last client's housemate, "Miss Kerrie." She pretty well managed all of the interactions with us. She was funny, upfront, kind and so very easy to work with. A perfect cap to a tough but very honest day's work.

So how'd we do? Below are the kind words Miss Kerrie shared about us on YELP. You can click on here or just read below. Thx!

"My housemate of 8 years, decided to get her own one bdrm apt.
Both locations move out/move in located west end Ottawa. "Murchy" promptly replied to my enquiry. Proceeded to promptly come out to survey what items would be moving and logisitcs (up from basement, to elevator of 2nd floor apt). And offer their quote.
Easy decision, booked on the spot for a few days later. We/she was their 3rd move of the day, Oct 1. 2nd move for them was a house in gatineau, yet they still showed up, even with rush hour traffic, and tired I'm sure.
All 3 guys of the team were outstandig in every way possible!
Fast, efficient, kind, courteous, funny, amazing teamwork, polite, stress-free outstanding move! All were so very appreciative when I offered soda and chocolate, and their collective reactions were heartwarmingly 'cute'!
Do NOT hesitate to book this outstanding team! You will NOT be dissappointed!"

Today was one of those days as a mover where you walk into a house and wonder "what have we gotten ourselves into?"

Earlier in the day, we had responded to an urgent request to move a young family, These can be really difficult situations - but they are challenges that we are always up for. We will go to great lengths to respond to urgent situations - and have many times.

In this case, when we arrived the house was in a fair bit of disarray with much remaining to be packed up and put into bags and boxes. Even pots and garbage bins.

The street that this young family lived on and moved out from is probably one of the rougher and more disadvantaged streets in the city. It has lots of challenges. And right now, with so much activity happening, it's probably not a great place to raise young children.

In their basement apartment, the 4 and 6 year old boys were worried that they weren't going with "Momma"- which was heartbreaking - but definitely not the case. Still, on one of the hottest days of the year, it had all the makings of a difficult move.

As professional movers, some times we can see and literally feel the stress of moving and its impact on people. But that's not how today turned out. Not at all.

With so few items, the families belongings only filled half the truck
and we were soon on our way to their new home in Nepean. When we arrived on their lovely new tree-lined street we were met by mother and baby, the boys, and their proud father. The boys and their father eager and ready to help unload the truck.

Now, there are not many thing that a 4 or 6 year old can or should carry out of a moving truck. But the boys (and their father) were insistent that they should help. Truthfully, it didn't take much convincing on our part. And the whole move was done in only a few hours.

So, in the end, just what did we get ourselves into today? Well, quite unexpectedly we got to watch a young family pick itself up and move from a very difficult housing situation into a bright, clean, lovely apartment in a nice house in a great neigbhourhood.

Sure, we did most of the moving - but there was something almost magical about these two little boys proudly carrying their things into their new home. All smiles and happiness.

We witnessed great family memories being born. It was a great day to be a mover.

We admit it. We're not huge fans of social media. But that's because we're always head down and "on task" taking care of our clients instead of scrolling through social media feeds. And trust us , you really don't want your movers distracted and head down in their IMs while carrying your most prized household belongings.

So, please bare with us while we get ready to roll out our socials. We'll be up and posting soon.
