Stop #3 on our Alaskan cruise dropped us into Alaska’s first city — also proudly the salmon capital of the world, Ketchikan.
🍣
We didn't book an excursion here, instead, I spent the day wandering through the town and discovered what the city has to offer. It's the kind of place that makes you slow down and actually look around.
Creek Street was the standout: a row of colourful stilt houses perched over the water, once a lively red‑light district and now one of the most photogenic stretches in town.
🏔️
Just a short walk away, the salmon ladder churned with rushing water, waiting for the summer run.
I then checked out the Tongass National Forest visitor center, wandered through the Tongass History Museum, and browsed the shops along the waterfront — the kind of spots where you swear you’re “just looking” and then somehow walk out with something anyway.
And because I apparently was on a personal donut tour while in Alaska, I even tracked down the second Jellyfish Donuts location to sample a new flavour… all in the name of research after that salmon donut in Juneau.
🍩
Alas: they were closed by the time I got there.

Did you know?
One of the most talked‑about Jack the Ripper suspects — Dr. Francis Tumblety — is buried in Rochester, NY.
🪦
He died on May 28, 1903, at 73, and now rests in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, a surprisingly quiet ending for a man forever linked to one of history’s darkest mysteries.
🪦
If you visit his grave, you’ll notice the stone reads “Tumuelty.” His family used several spellings over the years, and record‑keeping in the 1800s wasn’t exactly consistent. So depending on the source, you’ll see Tumblety, Tumuelty, Tumilty, and a few others floating around.
Was he actually the killer who terrorized Whitechapel in the late 1880s? We may never know — but he remained one of the leading suspects long after the murders stopped.
And here’s a wild footnote: in 1865, Tumblety was arrested for alleged involvement in the Lincoln assassination. No evidence connected him, and he was released without charges… but it definitely adds to the mystery.

Skagway feels like a town where the Gold Rush never fully left. The town still echoes the 1897–98 stampede, when thousands rushed through here chasing Yukon gold.
🏔️
Today, it’s a small mountain town with big energy — cruise ships in the harbour, the White Pass train rolling by, and history woven into every street. A mix of past and present that makes Skagway one of the most memorable stops in Southeast Alaska.
🚂
The entire downtown is basically a museum — Many of the boardwalks and false‑front buildings are preserved as part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, so walking the streets feels like stepping back in time.

The Wildlife Museum at Wild Adventures Yukon is such a fun little surprise in Carcross.
🐃
This museum is full of taxidermy displays of the many  animals that call(Ed) the north home.
🦬
It’s packed with Yukon wildlife, from big predators to the smaller creatures that are all part of the northern ecosystem. The displays are colourful, a bit quirky, and full of that Yukon charm. It mixes natural history with local stories, so you get a feel for how people and wildlife have shaped life in the territory.

At the Wild Adventure Yukon, in CarCross, they have several attractions, including 2 little niche museums.
One of which is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Museum.
This museum commemorates the role that the Mounties played in the developing Yukon. It gives you a glimpse into what the Mounties were dealing with back when the Yukon was nothing but huge distances, rough weather, and pure wilderness.
It’s a small & simple museum, but it will help put a different perspective to the history of the Yukon.

White Pass & Yukon Railway
🚂
Riding the train from Fraser down to Skagway was such a cool experience. The tracks hug the cliffs, the views drop right into these huge valleys, and you get this mix of mountains, waterfalls, dark tunnels, and old rail history all in one ride.
🚂

If you’re visiting Skagway, this is the journey you absolutely don’t skip. It is history, scenery, and pure adventure all in one unforgettable ride.
🏔️
I had done this train trip several years ago, but the views and just being on this iconic train never gets old.
Wind blown hair? Don't care.

Stop #2 on our Alaskan Cruise: Skagway.
🚂
We took A bus ride from Skagway to CarCross Yukon. This trip felt like a highlight reel of the North. White Pass views, the quiet beauty of Fraser, the beauty of partially frozen Tutshi and Tagish Lakes carved by glaciers set against the mountains, and the White Pass Yukon Rail line weaving in and out of the mountains.
🏔️
CarCross itself is a tiny town in Southern Yukon, but it is full of character and charm. colourful shops, cafés, and scenery that makes you slow down without trying. I made sure to visit the Chilkoot Sourdough Bakery which was loaded with so many tempting treats and friendly staff (no butter tarts, but the buttertart bars absolutely count). And those cinnamon rolls were to die for.
☀️
We swung by Wild Adventure Yukon -a fun, family‑friendly stop that mixes northern culture, animals, and hands‑on activities into one spot. It’s known for dog cart rides, sled dogs and puppies, a petting farm, gold‑panning experiences, and quirky little museums. (More on the museums later).
🐻
We made a quick pass by the CarCross Desert, the “world’s smallest desert,” which I wish we could have stopped at.

While in Juneau, we took a trip to see Mendenhall Glacier & Nugget Falls.
.
We took advantage of every moment there. We walked along the shore of the lake, strolled the boardwalk through the forest and over Steep Creek, explored some of the "bear trails", and went up to the visitors centre all to get different viewpoints of the glacier.
It’s one of those places that makes you stop and take a minute to just breathe it all in and just say "wow.”

Welcome to Juneau, Alaska.
🛳️
Stop 1 on our Alaskan cruise, was the capital city.
Juneau’s waterfront is the kind of place that was built for wandering — compact, colourful, and buzzing with the energy of tourists and activity.
This is where the mountains, ocean, and city all come together in the most Alaskan way.
🍣
What Juneau’s Waterfront / Downtown Is Like
- Historic storefronts — Bright, quirky shops line the streets, many with that gold‑rush‑era charm.
- Totem poles — Carved stories standing tall along the walkways, adding culture and colour to the harbour views.
- Harbour scenery — Cruise ships, fishing boats, misty mountains, and low clouds drifting between peaks. It’s dramatic in the best way.
- Easy strolling — Everything is close: cafés, local artisans, waterfront paths, and lookout spots where you can just stop and take in the view.
- Food tucked everywhere — From seafood restaurants to food trucks, the whole area feels like a treasure hunt for the gastro-tourist.
🦀
I stopped by and tried their made fresh to order salmon Donut and it was surprisingly very good.
I'm not a fan of salmon, but since Nick wasn't with us, I felt I needed to try it in his honour.
