It is with heavy hearts that we make this post.

Our elevator has burnt down. It is estimated that the fire began October 14th around 3:00am. The final piece fell at 10:00pm October 14th. Clean-up is still underway and is expected to take quite a while.

We are eternally grateful that there were no injuries and only minimal damage to neighbouring properties. For this we owe the hugest thank you to the St Jean Fire Department. It doesn’t feel like there are enough words to express our gratitude. You guys have shown time and time again what teamwork is and you set an amazing example of what looking out for your community really looks like. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Working closely with our local team was the Morris Fire Department who also played an integral role in keeping things under control. We thank you as well. Because of the scale of the situation, neighbouring departments were also called to help and those included: Dominion City, Letellier, Emerson, Altona, Winkler, Morden and Oak Bluff Colony and again, thank you is not enough. In total there were around 80 fire fighters working to keep the community safe.

Thank you also to the R.M. of Montcalm and Public Works staff who were on scene and tasked with directing this massive influx of resources.

We want to take this time to acknowledge how terrifying this incident must have been for a lot of our community, especially those that had to be evacuated in the middle of the night. This is something that has been weighing on us. We want you all to know that we have been thinking of you and we want to offer our sincere apologies for the turmoil. We want to apologize to the entire community who have had to deal with the chaos of the last day and will continue to as they now have to deal with a boil water advisory. This is weighing on us and we acknowledge the inconvenience this must be for everyone.

Thank you to Wyatt's Excavation & Landscaping and Brunet Construction for their courageous efforts yesterday working to bring the elevator down safely. They are also actively working to clear the scene.

Thank you to our staff who were on scene yesterday to offer any support they could. Some made it there before us. We respect your dedication and willingness to help.

We want to thank Jason Jablonski of Jablonski Electric, Plumbing & Heating for his outstanding thoughtfulness in helping to keep volunteers fed. We also want to thank Nicole Sabourin of BSI Insurance who offered support and direction amid the chaos Saturday morning. We are grateful to have you both as part of our community and appreciate your support.

Thank you to SolutionsIT for answering the call and ensuring our systems were operational in less than one day. We are grateful for the fantastic service.

Last but definitely not least, thank you to all the other community members who made sure the volunteers had what they needed. Keeping 80 fire fighters sustained is not an easy feat. Thank you also to everyone who has reached out with words of support and offerings of help. We want you to know that we appreciate you. We are truly grateful for this community.

We realize this could have been so much worse, but we thank God for watching over us and keeping everyone safe.

We are proud to have owned and operated one of the last few wooden grain elevators. She was strong and stubborn until the end.

The St. Jean skyline feels empty now and it will take some time to get used to.
