Our HO Scale Pullman-Standard 5077 cubic-foot 50' single-door boxcar is based on Lot 9831 and was developed with extensive prototype research.

From the molded plastic details to the wire and etched-metal parts, the goal was to reproduce a car that you simply don’t see offered very often in HO scale.

The PS 5077 is another example of NARC bringing less-common prototype freight cars to model railroaders - cars that might otherwise never make it into production.

In October 1972, Pullman-Standard built 500 5077 cubic-foot boxcars for Penn Central at its Bessemer, Alabama plant.
Delivered in Penn Central jade green, one side of the door carried the white italicized “Penn Central” name, while the other featured the large white PC “worm” logo.

The NARC 5077 reproduces this distinctive Pullman-Standard car, including the 15-panel “bow-tie” roof, Pullman corrugated ends, and embossed sliding door.

Underneath, the car is equipped with 70-ton ASF Ride Control trucks, 33" metal wheels, and Kadee #158 semi-scale magnetic couplers.

A car with plenty of Penn Central character, and a prototype that fits right into the everyday freight traffic of the early 1970s.

N Scale MIL 4550 cu. ft. Hoppers
Here’s a useful spotting question:
Trough hatches or round hatches?
That one detail can tell you whether you’re looking at the grain version or the potash/chemical version of a Canadian 4550 cubic-foot hopper.

But if you really want to identify the car, you need to look closer. The ends, running boards, outlet gates, brake equipment and even the reservoir location can all be different.

That’s where things get interesting.

We’re building those variations into the models rather than treating them as one generic hopper.

Penn Central's big green boxcars are hard to miss.

In October 1972, Pullman-Standard built 500 of these 5077 cubic-foot Plate B boxcars for Penn Central at its Bessemer, Alabama plant.

Delivered in distinctive jade green with the white Penn Central lettering and large PC “worm” logo, they were an unmistakable part of the Penn Central freight roster.

Now you can add one to yours.

This HO Scale model captures the original 1972 cars, from the distinctive Pullman-Standard roof and corrugated ends to the embossed sliding door and detailed underframe.

Small stock available in a range of Penn Central road numbers as well as other road names

If you’re trying to identify one of these Canadian 4550 cubic-foot hoppers, the roof is a good place to start.

Trough hatches usually point to grain service. Round hatches were used on cars for potash, chemicals and fertilizer.
But that’s only the first clue.

Look closer and you’ll find differences in the ends, running boards, outlet gates and brake equipment. Those details can turn what looks like the same hopper into a completely different prototype.

That’s the level of detail we’ve been working through with these N Scale cars

The 4550 cylindrical hoppers: At first glance, they look like the same hopper.
They weren’t.

The 4550 cubic-foot design developed in the 1970s became both a grain car and a potash/chemical car, with the hatch arrangement being one of the easiest ways to tell them apart. But that’s only the beginning.

There were differences in the ends, outlet gates, running boards, brake equipment, and even the location of the reservoirs.
Marine Industries alone produced 15 variations of the basic design.
Those differences matter when you’re trying to accurately represent the prototype -and they’re the details we’ve been paying attention to.

Developed by Canadian National and Canadian Pacific in the 1970s, the 4550 cubic-foot 4-bay cylindrical hopper became a familiar sight on Canadian railways. Marine Industries built thousands of these cars in 15 variations, including grain cars with full-length trough hatches and potash and chemical cars with individual round hatches. Many are still working today, in original and later paint schemes, and can be found across Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

FIRST HO SCALE PRODUCTION SAMPLES HAVE ARRIVED

The first production samples of our long-anticipated 4000 cu. ft. Gondola have arrived from our factory.

These undecorated samples give us our first opportunity to inspect the models and tooling as we move closer to production

These rugged gondolas were a truly Canadian design, hauling coal across Western Canada from the 1970s through to the present day. Built by multiple Canadian manufacturers, they featured subtle variations throughout their production.

Our models will be offered in five distinct prototype variations, with a wide range of road names to follow. The finished models will feature accurate body details, detailed underframes, and semi-scale metal wheels.

A note about these samples:
- The models shown are undecorated samples. Details may vary.
- These samples are also not fitted with our 0.088" tread wheels. The production models will include those.
