⚠️ 5/5 or 6/4 split sleeper?
The US FMCSA is preparing to conduct a pilot study to split the 10-hour off-duty into 5/5 or 6/4. On October 7, they sought public comment on the study's data-collection paperwork in the Federal Register.
Today's rule: 7/3 or 8/2 (and splits in between). The longest sleeper period in the pilot will be at least 5 hours.
According to the plan so far (may change):
📌 This is not a rule change, it's a study — about 256 volunteer drivers, 16 weeks
📌 FMCSA's full launch plan is in 2027
📌 Up to $1,600 upon completion of study
📌 Conditions: The carrier must not have had any FMCSA enforcement action in the last 3 years, and the driver and vehicle OOS rate must not be above the national average.
📌 This is a US pilot — Canada's HOS rules do not change with this. Whether Canada-based carriers can join or not is not clear in the notice.
OOIDA (owner-operators association) says that this flexibility should be used at the driver's own discretion, not under pressure from the carrier.
