Some landmarks need very little introduction. Sydney’s Big Ceilidh Fiddle is one of them. Standing approximately 55 feet tall, the waterfront icon was created at 20 times the scale of a conventional fiddle.

The fiddle itself measures 42 feet, 4 inches while the bow stretches 52 feet, 4 inches. Raised approximately three feet from the ground, the structure weighs more than 10 tons. Its body alone is nearly 15 feet wide and 25 feet tall.

There is impressive attention to detail too. The strings and bow were created to accurate scale using stainless steel aircraft cable. The enormous dimensions were intentional. The fiddle was designed to celebrate something immediately connected to Cape Breton: our musical heritage.

For cruise passengers and other visitors arriving in Sydney, it has become one of the first photographs of their Cape Breton visit. For residents, it has become something equally important, a familiar symbol of home.

When the Port of Sydney Ports began planning improvements to its cruise facilities, decades ago, the goal was bigger than creating a place for ships to dock. The Port wanted visitors to feel a connection with Cape Breton from the moment they stepped ashore.

A study looking at improvements to the facility also explored cultural and tourism themes that could help tell that story. Again and again, two distinctly Cape Breton images emerged: fiddles and lighthouses. The connection made sense. Music is woven deeply into the cultural life of Cape Breton while lighthouses speak to generations of communities shaped by the sea.

Those ideas became features of the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion.

The Big Ceilidh Fiddle became a dramatic outdoor welcome while the Pavilion Lighthouse brought another familiar Cape Breton image inside the building. Together, they helped create something more than a cruise terminal.

They created a place that begins telling the story of Cape Breton before a visitor ever leaves the waterfront.

Every building name has a story. The name on Sydney’s cruise pavilion represents one of the people who saw the potential of cruise tourism in Cape Breton long before the industry reached its present scale.

Joan Harriss came from a family deeply connected to Sydney’s marine business. An important moment came in 1962 when her father, Roy, contracted with Swedish America Line to bring a cruise ship to Sydney, an event identified in the Port’s history as Sydney’s introduction to the cruise industry.

Joan’s involvement continued for decades. Even after retiring in 1986, her interest in tourism remained strong. She turned her attention to heritage and visitor experiences, including the establishment of Jost Heritage House and the development and marketing of the Old Sydney Walking Tour, which became part of the shore excursion experience offered to cruise lines.

Joan Harriss died in 2001, but the Pavilion that bears her name carries forward the story of someone who helped imagine what Sydney could become as a cruise destination.

A week ago today, we welcomed our community to the Port of Sydney waterfront for the inaugural Big Fiddle Family Festival, and what an afternoon it was!

Approximately 350–400 people joined us for an afternoon of local music, food, entertainment and family fun, all while two cruise ships were visiting the Port.

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came out, participated, performed, supported the event and helped us celebrate our waterfront and the Port of Sydney.

We had:

350–400 community members
2 cruise ships in port
9 food vendors
4 featured entertainment acts
4 inflatable bounce houses
Multiple interactive activities for families

Most importantly, it was an opportunity to bring residents and visitors together and celebrate the Port as part of our community.

Thank you, Cape Breton, for making our first Big Fiddle Family Festival one to remember. We can't wait to Meet You at the Fiddle again!

As an organization operating in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, we are grateful for the opportunity to live and work here.

Today, we encourage our community to take time to listen to Indigenous voices, learn more about our shared history and reflect on the role each of us can play in reconciliation.
