🚨 TRAVEL ADVISORY - CAPE BRETON ISLAND🚨

According to the new Hilroy map, Cape Breton Island is no longer with us.

This came as a surprise to everyone here at the McCurdy Sydney Airport — particularly the passengers who landed here today.

For anyone currently visiting the Island, please remain calm.

We understand it may be unsettling to discover halfway through your vacation that your destination does not technically exist but rest assured:

The Cabot Trail has been located and is still spectacular.

The golf courses remain open, despite apparently being located in international waters.

All beaches have been accounted for. Not one appears to have noticed we're missing.

The pizza is still here, and we are absolutely not getting involved in that argument.

Fiddle operations remain at normal Cape Breton levels.

And your aunt is still wondering why you never visit.

All arriving passengers are encouraged to disregard the map, collect their luggage, and continue enjoying Cape Breton as though nothing has happened.

Departing passengers should also have no trouble leaving — although, geographically speaking, we're not entirely sure where you'll be departing from.

Beautiful island.
Internationally renowned.
Airport and everything.
Hard to miss.

🔎 Monday Morning Mystery! ✈️🚒

We know how much this community enjoys a good Monday morning mystery, so we’re hoping you can help us put some names to these faces!

Earlier this month, the family of George E. Gardiner visited the McCurdy Sydney Airport for a special tour of the place where George worked as a firefighter for decades. During their visit, they shared these wonderful photos from his time at the airport.

While we know George, we haven’t been able to identify some other members of his team pictured alongside him. Our best guess is that the first two photos date back to the 1940s, while the others were taken sometime in the 1960s.

If you recognize anyone—or have any stories or memories connected to these photos—please let us know in the comments. Every name and memory helps us preserve another piece of our airport’s history. ❤️

In anticipation of this evenings special aircraft, we asked our Chief Plane Spotter, Spencer, where his favourite place to watch aircraft at YQY is. His pick? Gate 3, right by our short-term parking! 📸✈️

Since WestJet launched its Calgary route from YQY last year, Spencer has rarely missed the chance to catch one of their aircraft arriving or departing. And along the way, he’s gotten to know quite a few members of the WestJet crew too! 💙

A few special behind the scenes moments from this year’s Atlantic Burn Camp parade 🚒❤️

Two of our newest employees, Gregory and Bradley, recently completed their ARFF training and got to put it to use during our annual parade water salute alongside some of our seasoned staff. It was extra special because Bradley got to learn this from his dad, Brendon, and share the experience with him.

And a shoutout to Steve, who is usually behind the wheel of our fire truck at community events. His enthusiasm helps make experiences like this possible and allows our airport to participate in our community in such a meaningful way.

We’re so proud of our team and how they always show up for events like this!

What an incredible turnout for today’s Atlantic Burn Camp Parade! Despite the weather, our community showed up in a BIG way to make the day special. ❤️

We were so happy to hear how much fun the campers, who have travelled from across Atlantic Canada, are having during their week here in Cape Breton.

Thank you to everyone who joined the parade, cheered along the route, and helped make today so memorable. We’re always proud to be part of this very special event!

We’re excited to welcome back one of our favourite annual traditions! 🎉

Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19, we’re proud to once again welcome the Atlantic Burn Camp parade to the McCurdy Sydney Airport — the starting point for what is always such a fun and special event!

The parade will begin gathering at the airport at 10:00 a.m. and will roll out at 10:30 a.m., making its way to the Mira Road Fire Hall.

Want to be part of the parade? 🏍️
If you have an antique vehicle, motorcycle, or another fun ride you’d like to bring along, come meet everyone at the airport and join in! The more, the merrier.

Want to cheer them on? 👋
Find a spot along the parade route, give them a wave, and get ready for lots of lights, sirens and smiles! 🚒🚑🚓

The Atlantic Burn Camp is a week-long camp in New Campbellton for burn survivors ages 6–17, offered completely free of charge to campers. We’re always honoured to play a small part in kicking off this special tradition. ❤️

Come out tomorrow and help us give the campers a great send-off!
