WARNING- long rambling & awareness post. Sort of.
Ever hit a point in life where you think everything is just going along fine and then something wakes you up from that dream?
It happened to me a few days ago. Someone called and had the wrong number.
“Hi, {not my name}, this is _______ from ________ just wondering if I caught you at a good time - wondering if we can chat about your earlier inquiry about the opportunity to diversify your investment portfolio.”
What my what? 😆🤔
Now I admit, somewhere along the way my AuDHD took a wrong turn on a decommissioned mental logging road somewhere and I missed learning a lot of financial life skills (not that I’ve ever learned anything easily 😢). Well, not some - most I must confess. To this day when people toss around terms like “investments”, “stocks”, “residuals”, “return on investments”, “savings”… I’m sitting there with a totally blank head, glazed over stare & wondering how this engaging conversation we were having a few minutes ago about Lego suddenly jumped into this foreign land of far more advanced and confusing subject matter.
Honestly, it’s a miracle I’ve made it this far and I’m in disbelief when i think about it. I’m thankful that I at least understand the basics of economics that your income *should* be more than your expenditures. 👍 Now if only I could learn how to demonstrate I know that by use of a spreadsheet.
But back to that phone call. I literally said “what my what?” Haha… Now if you have this thing called an “investment portfolio” which to me is some mythical abstract concept - congratulations. You’ve made it. I’m still stuck fishing at a lake I found along that decommissioned logging road & I don’t even enjoy fishing but I got hungry.
But now on to another weird admission of the AuDHD mind. Certain words conjure up certain vivid visuals for me. And the word “diversify” is one of them. The visual I get is of a bug smacking a windshield. 🤷♂️ Honest. I will now pause to let you laugh. I can’t explain why. See because the way the autistic/adhd brain works is that quite often a word definition is meaningless. It’s kind of hard to explain. But the word meaning needs to be connected to some sort of visual stimuli that enables us weirdos to make a connection as to what the word means. Diversify pretty much means to spread out or expand. Which is exactly what a bug does when it smacks a windshield. Hope that makes some sort of sense to all you normal investing pros.
So now for the whole big buggy picture:
“Diversify your investment portfolio”
My immediate visual aura was a bug stuffing a wad of cash into a satchel and then plowing into a windshield, with random notes of cash then being caught up in the wind and fluttering around 🤷♂️
Anyway, I told the guy he had the wrong number as I didn’t have much of a clue about what he was talking about and I have no known connections to Brookfield or Mark Carney.
I did ask him though if the individual he thought I was might be interested in making new friends. 🤗
