Rebuilding an airplane is a monumental task to say the least. Having been through this process several times over the years, we have a deep appreciation for those who have completed such a task. This past Monday, our friend Gerry Marcil dropped in to Thorburn Lake to show us the aircraft he rebuilt in only six months. The amount of detail is incredible and with all the enhancements he's added, it's performance is astounding. Congratulations on a job well done Gerry!

This past week has been quite busy preparing aircraft for winter storage. In all, 11 airplanes will be with us for the winter and we've already started inspecting several of them. Getting an early start on winter maintenance is essential to ensure that an aircraft is all set to go in the spring.

A new engine for a great old airplane! C-GACT is a 1964 Cessna 180G that we've maintained for over 24 years. After a lot of preparation, including cleaning the firewall, removal, inspection, painting and reinstallation of the engine mount, a factory new engine was installed. Following several trial ground runs, we carried out a successful test flight to confirm normal operation.

Fuel, air and spark are the 3 main requirements to make a piston engine run. Magnetos provide the "spark" and upon installation, they are correctly timed to make the engine fire at precisely the right moment. Slick and Bendix are the 2 most common mag types and each manufacturer recommends removing the mags periodically for internal inspection. A recent inspection carried out on a set of Bendix mags identified 3 defects, which if left unattended, may have led to more serious consequences. 1st pic- loose arm on rotor gear. 2nd pic- cracked coil. 3rd pic- crack in distributor block. It's essential to inspect the mags at regular intervals and ensure the magneto-to- engine timing is correct.

Exhaust systems require regular inspections due to the extreme operating conditions they are subject to. A detailed visual inspection can help identify small defects before they become even bigger problems. Removing an exhaust system is sometimes very difficult, as heat is often required to remove nuts which are seized on the exhaust studs. However, it's a necessary evil to periodically remove an exhaust system to access and inspect the studs which hold the exhaust on, as can be seen in the attached photos. All the old studs were carefully drilled out and replaced with new.
