I've been talking about bulbs but I've been busy harvesting and cleaning seeds now.

There are lots of bulk seed varieties added as an 'Year End Sale', plus some new and restocked seeds added, too!

Anise Hyssop is known but do you know Purple Giant Hyssop?

Both are in 'Agastache' family but these two are quite different.

As the common name suggests, Purple Giant Hyssop gets up to 6-7ft.

Don't get discouraged by the height, you can do the Chelsea Chop in spring to keep the height less and bushier.

What I really like about this plant is the flowers.

It has beautiful pale pink flowers, kind of remind me of cotton candy.

It has more slender and spikey flowers than Anise Hyssop, too.

A great pollinator plant, birds eat the seeds, too.

How was your long weekend?
Hope it was a good one!

I did bulb planting plan during the weekend, thinking adding tulips here and hyacinth there, etc.

I love doing this, kind of dreaming of spring!
How about you?

Before this year's Bulb Sale, I was contemplating whether I should get Tulip 'Copper Image' or not.

I was going to change my Bulb Sale selection a bit for this year and I already offered this particular variety.

But 'Copper Image' has selected again and I'm happy I've done it!

This is a really really fabulous Late Tulip double variety.

Not only the beautiful copper to apricot coloured blooms (the colour fades and both beautiful!) but 'Copper Image' comes back for several years in my garden.

This is kind of unusual for double tulip varieties, you might see maybe 1 or 2 bulbs out of 10 blooming next year but usually weak and small and if you see any blooms on the 3rd year, I'd say it's a treat!

But 'Copper Image' is different, more than half, probably 70-80% of the bulbs came back in the 2nd year, then again maybe 50% came back in the 3rd year.

The flower size might be a bit smaller but they don't look bad, still gorgeous!

This is exactly why I selected this variety.

As you know I prefer perennial tulip varieties like the Darwin Tulips or Species/Botanical Tulips.

I want to offer something really worth for my customers, especially the bulb prices are pretty expensive now.

So this is a wonderful variety not only for cut flowers.

The height is a bit shorter than other varieties, I'd say, but the gorgeous double flowers really stand out!

And I really love the colours, both dark orangey-peach colour at first then soft apricot colour later.

It's also quite long blooming.
Great for containers, too!

Hyacinth, Muscari (Grape Hyacinth) might not the bulbs you think about first when you planning to shop for bulbs.
But they are still great bulbs to have!

Hyacinths bring a nice bold display with the gorgeous full blooms with that delicious scent!

I love dark colours like deep blue and dark red ones but 'China Pink's delicate and porcelain pink is also very beautiful and I love the soft look.

Like I said it in my recent post (go 4 posts back), pair this 'China Pink' with Muscari in containers and you can have this sophisticated table arrangement!

Hyacinths bloom for several years, the blooms will getting smaller but I still love them.

Muscari 'Magic Series' have fun colours, 'Ocean Magic' starts with dark blue then shades into lighter blue.

'White Magic' has this refreshing white blooms.

What I really love about both Hyacinth and Muscari is their versatality.

You can enjoy them in small containers so you don't need to have a large one, easily enjoy the flowers indoors, too.

Or even growing them in a special vase with water (Hyacinth) or maybe with some stones and some soil (Muscari).
Then you can also enjoy them in gardens, or as cut flowers.

And the scent is a bonus, too!
So try them!

Today is all about Tulips!

I have 4 different varieties, 2 are Darwin Tulips, which are great perennial tulips with large flowers and sturdy stems.

Have you ever disappointed with tulips only blooming for a year even though you spent a lot of money?

Lots of fancy and expensive tulip varieties bloom nicely only for a year but Darwin Tulips come back year after year, so it'll be a great investment!

Actually, all the bulb varieties I'm offering are great perennials, even the fancy 'Copper Image' Tulip.

This 'vintage-feel', great colour double tulip blooms like 3-4 years in my garden and very long blooming, too!

Or if you're not into a huge, bold display of regular tulips, then try Botanical Tulip 'Little Beauty'.

This is my favourite botanical/species tulip variety with beautiful purple/pink colour.

Most of the fancy coloured botanical tulips are expensive and they don't last long (at least in my garden) but this variety really does well!

I already talked about each bulb variety but I'm going to post some easy to see bulb info!

Today with Daffodils, Allium and Double Snowdrop.

As I said this yesterday, Daffodil 'Replete' was sold out before but one more package added (and now 25% off!) so grab it before it's gone!

Daffodil 'Geranium' is also low stock and it's out of stock from other places so get them now!

If you're looking for something squirrels don't eat, try Allium siculum (Sicilian Honey Lily), the bulbs smell like onion so squirrels avoid Alliums.

Don't worry, the flowers don't really smell like onion unless you cut lots of them and bring indoors.

If it's blooming in your garden, you don't smell a thing.

Double Snowdrop is great for early spring flowers, when really nothing in bloom!

I love seeing the flowers in March and bloom for a long time, always make me smile!

It's October!

I know, I can't believe it, either.
Hopefully you had a nice summer.

It definitely feels like Autumn now, some plants are already turning colours.

So, you know it's time to have some bulbs!

As I always say, you need more bulbs than you think so get more and you'll have a wonderful display in next spring and summer!

No garden? No problem!
Pretty much all of the varieties I'm offering can be planted in containers!

Or try small bulbs like Snowdrops, Muscari (Grape Hyacinth), Botanical Tulip and even Hyacinth are great for small container planting (like pictured here)

And after flowering, leave them as they are, letting the leaves yellowing (this is important), then either you can take the bulbs out and store indoors for the next year or bring the whole container with the bulbs indoors in cool area (no watering needed in winter), then come spring, repot them with new soil.

They'll bloom again and you can still enjoy them for years this way!
So don't throw them away!

If you have a garden but planted these bulbs in containers, you can also transplant them in your garden, then you can enjoy them again in your garden next year!

I've just started cleaning White Globe Thistle (Echinops ritro) seeds from my garden.

The process is not the easiest, it's not like you open a seed head and multiple seeds come out.

With Globe Thistle, you need to wait until a seed head is fully mature (I usually wait until it starts falling naturally) first.

There's tiny cotton like dust while cleaning the seeds, which sometimes irritates (more like itchy feel) my skin so I wear gloves to clean them.

Then a seed is wrapped in a spikey floret so I need to open one by one to get it out, although now I know if there's a mature seed in or not by looking or feeling most of the time.

I said this many times but I love the process of seed cleaning even though it's quite a lot of work.

You need to know the timing, then cleaning requires concentration and patience.

Then counting is sometimes eye straining work.

It's labour of love, really, so if you feel the seed prices are too high, this is why.

Especially a small seed seller like me, we do most of the work by hand, not with fancy machines.

But I do cherish the time, it's like talking with the plant by seeing how the seeds are stored, then touching the seeds.

I feel like I can get to know the plant more by cleaning the seeds.

Sometimes it even feels like meditation or therapy.

Anyway, if you want something low maintenance perennials, try Globe Thistle, once established, it's really easy to care, drought tolerant, not fussy about soil (even prefers poor soil rather than nutrient rich soil), either.

A wonderful pollinator plant and nice architectural plant.

And of course, very photogenic!

Since I started cleaning this year's seeds, the last year's seeds are now available as a bulk option.

Get them now and sow as Winter Sowing this fall or winter!
