Phew, that was quite a storm last night here in Toronto!

We have more and more this kind of treacherous rain now, it might be a good idea to garden accordingly.

You can start a 'Rain Garden' or just adding more native plants in your garden.

So here, another 'What's bloom' in my garden' and also a good candidate for a rain garden:

Joe Pye W**d (Eutrochium maculatum)

Joe Pye grows like a shrub, tall and tough, it prefers moist soil but can tolerate some dry soil so it's great for rainy garden.

Both for part shade and full sun, if you don't want it to be too tall, do the Chelsea Chop.

I love the dusky pink flowers, they attract lots of pollinators, too!

'What's bloom' in my garden: Ontario native plants

Blue Varvain (Verbena hastata)

Tall and photogenic, really beautiful Ontario native plant.

I really really love this plant, it's simply gorgeous!

It prefers moist soil, in my garden it looks wilting in full sun spot, so I make sure to give it a good soak when I water, but not water guzzling or anything, I don't water my garden plants much.

It can take some shade, too.

It self seeds in my garden.

Now more bulk seed varieties are added to my online store!

Hana Earth Gardens' signature is offering seeds in small quantities and affordable price so you can try more varieties.

But I do also offer some seeds in larger quantities.

Instead of 20-30 seeds per packet, there are 100-200 or even more seeds in a packet, depending on the variety.

And they're still affordable!

I've been adding more seed varieties to 'Bulk & Save' page to my online store, especially now more Ontario native plant seeds!

Prefect for perennial seeds which germination might be more erratic than annual seeds and need more seeds.

And it's perfect for trying Winter Sowing!

I know I'm talking about bulbs but there are actually some potted plants still available for pickup orders.

So let's talk about one of the available plants today!

Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica)

This is my new favourite Ontario native plant!
Also blooming in my garden now.

Good for both sun and shade, excellent for damp clay soils.

Purple flowers are pretty and this is another native plant that can blend really well with other non native plants.

In my garden, it self seeds well but not aggressive.

I also love the lime green foliage, too!

Plant type: Perennial Zones 3-9
Height: 1-3ft

There are at least 2 plants in a 6 in container (about 6in diameter & 4in height).
These plants were grown from seeds and about 2 years old.
Some plants are already 10in. and already blooming!

Some native plants aren't easy to grow from seeds, so get the potted plants instead!

Another come back bulb variety this year is:

Allium siculum

Also called Sicilian Honey Lily, I've been offering this variety for a long time.

I decided not to offer another all time favourite Allium 'Purple Sensation' but still wanted to offer this variety.

Simply because this is a great Allium, even though it doesn't look like Allium since it's not a 'ball' like shape.

If you know Ontario native Nodding Onion, it resembles that, like nodding look of the flower.

But Allium siculum has much larger flower size than Nodding Onion and more gorgeous colours.

The outside of the flower is like grey/green but inside is plum purple with creamy white lining and it looks so beautiful.

I always think about chandelier by looking at this Allium.

It's been coming back for years in my garden and this is also a good pollinator plant, too!

The leaves keep looking nice, not like 'Purple Sensation' but this variety looks really nice with other plants, doesn't seem to mind the competition.

I might stop offering this variety next year so get the bulbs this year!

Another Darwin Tulip I'm offering again this year is 'White Clouds'.

Sometimes it's also called as 'Hakuun' (means 'White Clouds' in Japanese)

When I first knew about the Darwin Tulips, there were really small colour selections, red and yellow and pink, then white.

Now there are more colours even purple one and even there are different pink tones.

But the white variety is pretty much this 'White Clouds' only still.

You might think white tulips are kind of boring but I really love them.

They might not stand out like other bright colours but I actually like more muted tones.

White makes this serene and refreshing scenes in your garden, I love mix this 'White Clouds' with other bulbs like Poet Daffodil (not offered this year but really nice variety) with the same white base colour design.

Or plant 'White Clouds' with yellow or orange tulips, it creates cool and modern sophisticated pop kind of look.

Most of 'Specialty Tulip Bulb' sellers don't offer the Darwin Tulips, some of them just started offering them this year, I think, because they probably realized that the Darwin Tulips are great for cut flowers and still you can have the flowers next year!

But anyway, there's something you want to check when you buy bulbs, which is the bulb size.

If the sellers don't tell you the bulb size, it's a bit dubious.

To get good qualitied bulbs, check the bulb size.
Here, I'm offering both Darwin Tulips with size 12+.
This is a top-size, premium grade commercial grading.

You might see the cheaper priced bulbs but they might be smaller size or the size isn't even specified.

As I said it before, I personally pack each and every bulb by my hand, making sure each bulb's quality.

Not machine packed, not in plastic bags, either.

Each bulb variety comes with a paper bag with a label and some information.

And you'll get a surprise bonus as well!

I mentioned about 'good perennial tulip varieties' that I've been offering in my last post, so let's talk about them.

If you've been following me for a long time, you know I've been offering the Darwin Hybrid Tulips.

I'm only offering 2 varieties this year 'Apricot Pride' and 'White Clouds' but these are kind of special to me.

'Apricot Pride' is my very best fav of all Darwin Tulips, the colours are absolutely beautiful, there are other pink/salmon/apricot coloured Darwin tulips but you can enjoy the colour changing kind of effect with this variety, it starts with apricot colour, this itself is beautiful enough but then the colour fades into pale yellow later.

If I had to choose one Darwin Tulip variety, then this is it!

The Darwin Tulips are pretty much like the single tulip varieties but definitely have better perennialized ability, long sturdy stems with large flowers.

If you've never tried them, I strongly recommend!

If you haven't already, it's time to order bulbs!

I really think bulbs are great but still underrated.

Just think, in spring, after the long long dark cold winter, you see those cheerful flowers of bulbs like snowdrops, tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, alliums, etc. and don't they make you smile?

I always say this but you think you planted enough bulbs in fall, usually you feel like you need a lot more in spring.

Several customers actually said 'bulbs are a good investment' and I totally agree with them!

Maybe lots of people think bulbs, especially tulip bulbs as annuals, if they are for cut flowers, and lots of tulip varieties don't bloom each year or bloom for 2 years or so and then stop blooming.
(This is why a lot of farmer florists discard tulip bulbs after blooming in the first year)

This is exactly why I only offer good perennial tulip varieties, even a double blooming one.

I don't offer the varieties just looking pretty for a year (and very expensive!)

All of the varieties I offer are carefully selected with a true gardener's mind, not as a flower farmer or florist mind.

Of course, if that's what you're aiming for, that's totally ok, but I feel that if you're a hobby gardener, you don't need to follow too much of a trend and spend a lot of money.

Also discarding the bulbs after the first year doesn't feel right to me as sustainability.

There are lots of great varieties with better growing qualities and affordable prices.

Yes, the varieties I'm offering might not look as flashy as others but I know these are all good perennials, so they're a good investment for you.

New seed variety

Dahlia Seeds - Bronze Mix

I haven't offered dahlia seeds for a long time it's simply because most of them are F1 hybrids.

This is a very similar to 'Bishop's Children' variety, with the bronze foliage (dark purple) with single flowers.

The colours are coral, red, red-purple, orange, etc.

I love single dahlia varieties, they aren't as finicky as popular dinner plate dahlias, bloom earlier and longer with more flowers.

They're also compact growing, you usually don't need any supports and perfect for containers.

And they're pollinator friendly, too!

You can start the dahlia seeds like zinnias', not that difficult to grow from seeds.

They'll produce the tubers at the end of the growing season, or you can also collect seeds as well.

Of course, from the seeds, they aren't exactly the same as the original plant, if you want to keep that way, you need to have the tubers.

Single dahlia and bronze dahlia varieties aren't as popular, but they're still very good, especially the bronze varieties, they're really beautiful!

It's hard to get the Bishop's series (both tubers and seeds) now so why don't you get this one!?

Another restocked seed variety

Dianthus 'Rainbow Loveliness'

If you're following me for a long time, you know I love Dianthus!

Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) are more popular and I love them as well but I love this variety!

This is a hybrid Fringed Pink (Dianthus superbus) variety, a traditional heirloom variety, an open-pollinated complex hybrid, introduced in the mid-1920s.

There's another popular variety called 'Lace Perfume' and both are very similar.

I just love the beautiful fringed flowers, they even look a bit like fringed orchids!

They are just not like anything else, looking so special.

If you think Dianthus are old-fashioned, try this one, it's not like regular Sweet Williams, or Carnations.

Great for cut flowers and containers as well!
