"I wouldn't have been on half of the vacations I've gone on if I waited for the group chat to get themselves together."

She booked the trip solo. So did everyone else on it. And that is exactly what made it so good.

A trip full of women who all made the same decision, to stop waiting and just go. The women she met made it ten times better. That is not a coincidence. That is what happens when everyone in the room chose themselves first.

Timathea said it better than we ever could.

"I've discovered that my best travel superpower is curiosity. When I follow it, I have the best experiences and end up falling deeper in love with the world. It may be as simple as spontaneously choosing which road to walk down, or travelling to a place I've read about to see how it feels to be there in person and breathe its air, or taking time to get to really know a person from a different culture through the lens of sincere interest in the diversity of their ways of living, eating, and celebrating. Curiosity enriches every travel experience."

There is still so much work to be done to break outdated stereotypes about what it means to be a woman over 50.

The travel industry has been slow to catch up. But our community never needed their permission.

Adventurous. Empowered. Curious. That is who we are.

You have not lost your sense of adventure. It has been waiting for you to come back to it. 🌍

Our bodies at 50, 60, 70 or 90 are not the same as they were at 25. That is simply true. But it does not mean adventure is over. It means adventure looks different now, and that is not a lesser thing. It is a wiser one.

"Even though we are not thought of as trailblazers, we are a bloody brave bunch of women who are not prepared to stop living just because we are a certain age." Joy Fox, 89, solo traveller and first recipient of the JourneyWoman Evelyn Hannon Solo Travel Award.

Six books. Six women who stopped waiting and started moving. 📚

JourneyWoman writer Jules Torti has put together the most inspired reading list we have seen in a long time.

A 67-year-old grandmother who walked 2,050 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Keds with a 14-pound bag. A Pulitzer prize-winning journalist who followed Portuguese dairy farmers to the Azores looking for home. A woman who cycled 10,201 miles following the Monarch butterfly migration on a 1989 bike with cat litter container panniers.

These are not travel books. They are permission slips.

Raise your hand if the first thing you do when you get home from a trip is collapse into your own bed.Raise your hand if the first thing you do when you get home from a trip is collapse into your own bed.

Sleeping well when you travel is one of those things nobody really talks about but everybody struggles with.

Unfamiliar beds, strange temperatures, city noise, time zones and yes, menopause. It all adds up.

JourneyWoman contributor Amanda Burgess sat down with sleep expert Shawna Robins, author of Powerful Sleep, for her top tips. A few that stopped us in our tracks:

Not eating or drinking anything three hours before bed. Turning off blue light an hour before sleep.

Swapping melatonin for magnesium, around 80% of us are deficient in it. And calling down for an extra blanket rather than suffering through a room that is too cold.

Small changes. Real difference.

Her mum travelled solo at 88. That was all the inspiration she needed.

In episode 2 of the Ageless Adventuress Travel Podcast, hosted by Kathy Buckworth and sponsored by , talks about the woman who showed her that age was never a reason to stop. Her mother's solo adventures lit something in her that she has never let go out.

"Once you're in motion, it gets easier. Your dreams are worth it, even when fear is loud."

If that is not a reason to book the trip, we do not know what is.

She was 82 years old, solo in New York City, and sitting on a panel called Kickass Women Over 50. And she had a lot to say.

JourneyWoman contributor Diana Eden visited New York for the Women's Travel Fest conference in 2023 and came back with five practical tips for older women navigating the city, from booking non-stop flights and protecting your sleep, to skipping the noisy cocktail parties and finding better conversation at a quiet corner bar instead.

She also visited the Museum of Broadway, which for Diana, a former Broadway dancer, felt like travelling back in time.

"I am not old but wise. I am not sedentary but adventurous. I am not lonely, I am empowered." Diana Eden Entertainment &Travel Author

At 43 she quit her job at the United Nations and bought a one-way ticket to South Africa. She planned to be gone six months. She was away for nearly four years.

At 53 she started a travel blog for solo women before solo travel was even a thing.

At 67 she launched another one, this time about French life and culture, and taught herself everything from scratch.

At 70 she is thinking about podcasting, a YouTube channel, and maybe finally writing that book.

JourneyWoman writer Leyla Alyanak is proof that reinvention does not have an expiry date. It just gets more intentional.

"It's not too late. Even if an entire goal can't be accomplished, if you've moved the needle, you've succeeded."

Read now: https://buff.ly/770ydpb

It’s never too late to embrace reinvention at any age, as travel writer Leyla Alyanak, 70, is still discovering as she looks for new adventures.
