As another busy cruise season comes to a close, we’re celebrating the people behind the scenes who help keep Vancouver’s cruise industry moving!

This year, BCMEA’s Workforce Operations team dispatched over 26,000 jobs to support cruise ship operations at Port of Vancouver - Port de Vancouver — an increase of nearly 24% more jobs compared to 2025! This growing demand highlights the important role the waterfront workforce plays in supporting Vancouver’s cruise industry.

From our dedicated Dispatch Team matching the right skills to the right jobs, to the skilled workforce putting their training and expertise into action - it takes teamwork to keep cruise operations running smoothly.

Canada has set an ambitious goal to double exports to non-U.S. markets in the next decade. Reaching it will require getting more capacity from our trade infrastructure – and continued investment in technology and modernization will be critical.

Every day, $1.1 billion in goods moves through B.C.'s ports, nearly half of Canada's trade with markets outside North America.

A new report prepared by KPMG Canada LLP for the BCMEA shows what can happen when terminals invest to modernize and move more cargo. They found that both the work and workforce grew in parallel: more than 70% more workers, 83% more payroll hours, and record earnings in 2025.

More investment. More cargo. More jobs to keep Canada competitive.

The numbers behind growth on Canada's West Coast ports, 2009 to 2025.

A new report prepared by KPMG Canada LLP for the BCMEA looks at what 16 years of technological modernization have meant for the people who move Canada's cargo.

✅ 3,600 more waterfront workers, an increase of more than 70%

✅ Cargo volumes up more than 70% over the same period

✅ Payroll hours up 83%, from 4.9 million to 9 million

✅ Over $377 million invested in training and upskilling since 2010

Modernizing technology means more cargo and more jobs at B.C.’s waterfront.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour all those impacted by the legacy of residential schools, including the Survivors, the children who never returned home, and the families and communities who continue to carry this history.

For the BCMEA and our members, advancing Indigenous reconciliation begins with reflection and is carried forward through meaningful action. By listening, learning, and building relationships with local First Nations, we can better understand community priorities, create more opportunities, and build a more resilient and inclusive waterfront.

First Nations have long been connected to the waterfront - as stewards of the land and waters and as members of the workforce. The BCMEA remains committed to continuing to meaningfully learn and engage, today and every day, as part of our ongoing path toward reconciliation.

When you think of work at B.C.'s ports, you might picture the waterfront. But the employment impact reaches much further.

In 2025, West Coast port operations directly supported 56,200 jobs in B.C., while the broader economic impact supported 152,100 jobs across Canada.

That includes jobs across transportation, logistics, supplier industries and the businesses supported by port activity and waterfront wages.

Today is World Maritime Day, an opportunity to recognize the global impact of the maritime industry and the people who make it possible.

B.C.’s port ecosystem handles $409 billion in annual cargo, facilitating nearly 50% of Canada’s trade with partners outside North America. From safety and sustainability to supply chain resilience, our waterfront workforce plays a central role in moving Canadian commodities to global markets.

Together, operations across West Coast ports support 152,100 jobs nationwide and contribute nearly $25 billion to Canada’s GDP.

The British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) welcomes the Building Canada Strong Act’s inclusion of key recommendations from the Industrial Inquiry Commission’s report on West Coast ports.

If passed, Bill C-39 would address the structural challenges unique to West Coast ports that labour experts Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers identified in their May 2025 Industrial Inquiry Commission report.

The BCMEA remains committed to working in good faith with our ILWU union partners to reach fair, durable agreements that serve workers, employers, and the communities and Canadians that rely on our West Coast ports.

We look forward to working with the government, Members of Parliament and Senators as Bill C-39 moves through parliament.
