Founded in 1900 in Cleveland, Ohio by Rollin H. White, White Motor Company began as a family business built around sewing machines. It later shifted its focus to something far more demanding: heavy-duty trucks.

As the industry grew, so did White. From the 1920s through the 1960s, the company became known for building trucks that worked – durable, practical, and designed for real conditions. Early enclosed cabs and vocational designs helped shape how drivers operated and how fleets functioned.

By the late 1960s, with the introduction of the 4000-series and White Western Star, the company was still pushing forward. But the 1970s brought new pressures – competition increased, experiments fell short, and the margin for error narrowed.

In 1980, White declared bankruptcy and was acquired by Volvo. The name remained on trucks for years after, until it quietly disappeared in 1995, leaving behind a legacy that carried into the next generation of trucking.
