Do used masks and gloves pose an infection risk to the public?

“It’s hard to say,” says Dr. Chris Sikora, medical health officer for Alberta Health Services.

We know that PPE, whether it’s gloves or masks, can carry viral material from the last wearer. However, it’s unknown how long the virus remains active on those surfaces.

Contactless or touchless trash bins, with no covers, lids or ‘flaps’, can encourage people to dispose of PPE properly while reducing the risk of contamination.
