Our zine is now live online!

In March 2026, the Manitoba League of Persons with Disabilities held a zine making workshop. People at the workshop created zine pages about their experiences as a person with a disability finding and maintaining accessible housing, and experiences of being "under-housed". Art making was collaborative.

The in-person zine launch was held in June 2026 as part of First Fridays in the Exchange at Katie + Gunner Gallery, bringing disability advocacy to a large public event and into a gallery space - areas that are often reserved for professional artists. Over 100 people attended and were able to talk to the people involved in making the zine, pick up copies of the zine, and make their own zine on any topic at our art-making table!

Attendees discussed housing issues in the community and received informal support. There was lots of meaningful discussion around the creation of the zine, and the art-making table allowed people to connect with the materials in a hands-on way.

The events were co-hosted by the Manitoba League of Persons with Disabilities and the West Broadway Tenants Committee

This project is supported by the Canadian Centre for Housing Rights (CCHR) with funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) – Race, Gender, and Diversity Initiative (RGDI).

We hope this zine teaches the public and policy makers about the challenges that people with disabilities face in finding and maintaining adequate and accessible housing.

Bannock for Binders is a fundraising effort to support Northern Pride groups in Manitoba. Funds will be raised by selling bannock and other goods at the Fireweed Food Co-op South Osborne Farmers Market. All time and supplies will be donated to ensure that all proceeds go directly back to the community.

You will find Sunny and some other community members there on August 5th and September 2nd from 4:00pm-8:00pm.

‼️True North Health: Health and Wellness Program‼️

WHO: A Health and Wellness Program available for individuals and families who receive assistance from EIA and are 7 years of age or older.

WHAT: Each individual who receives assistance from EIA and who is approved by health services receives the following at no cost:
👟1 pair of shoes
❄️1 pair of winter boots
👣1 pair of custom orthotics (these help with overall comfort and health)
👀1 full eye exam at our state-of-the-art eye clinic (this also helps to test for early onset of autoimmune disease, diabetes, strokes, hypertension, and high cholesterol)
🤓1 pair of eye glasses (if needed)

HOW: A specialist will come to any location or home to help those interested with the shoe, winter boot, and custom orthotic portion of the program. The shoes, winter boots, and orthotics will be sent to the address you provide. For the eye care portion of the program, an appointment time will be booked for the individual or family and if needed transportation will be provided at no cost to and from the clinic.
